Bukayo Saka Injury Leaves Arsenal Facing Tough Fixtures
Arsenal’s season has just taken a sharp, unwelcome turn. Bukayo Saka, the heartbeat of Mikel Arteta’s attack, is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a quad injury in the Champions League draw with Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
He left the stadium without crutches, which offered a sliver of optimism, but Arteta’s tone afterwards cut through any real hope. The manager admitted it “did not look good” for his winger, and the mood around London Colney since has reflected that concern.
Arteta waiting on scans – but fears grow
Speaking on Friday ahead of Arsenal’s home game against Everton, Arteta confirmed that Saka was undergoing further assessment and that the club still do not have a definitive timeline. The concern is clear: internally, there are fears the 25-year-old could be out for around eight weeks.
"He's got another MRI this afternoon because he had quite a lot of fluid in the area so it was difficult to understand the extent of the injury," Arteta said. "We will know more tomorrow.
"We need a few more scans and opinions from the specialists. When a player is struggling to walk without any pain, he's restricted in movement, they are not good signs. Let's be a little bit patient so we can give a definitive assessment."
The language is cautious, but the picture is stark. Fluid around the injury. Restricted movement. A player who rarely comes off asking to be withdrawn in one of the club’s biggest European nights of the season.
A thin squad stretched at the worst possible time
The timing could hardly be worse. Christos Tzolis remains out with a hamstring problem and Arsenal are already light in wide areas. Now, in the middle of a congested schedule, Arteta has lost his most reliable outlet.
This is not a quiet stretch, either. Before the November international break, Arsenal must navigate five more fixtures, including a daunting trip to Anfield to face Liverpool. Rotations were already going to be tight; now they become a puzzle.
If the eight-week prognosis proves accurate, Saka will not feature again before Christmas. That would rule him out of some of the defining fixtures of Arsenal’s campaign: Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, Tottenham and Real Madrid all loom on the calendar, with a possible return pencilled in around the home clash with Manchester United on December 20.
The run Saka is likely to miss
The list of games he could sit out underlines the scale of the problem:
- Everton (H) – October 24
- Fleetwood (A) – October 27
- Liverpool (A) – November 1
- Slavia Prague (A) – November 4
- Hull (H) – November 7
- Newcastle (A) – November 21
- Borussia Dortmund (H) – November 24
- Man City (H) – November 29
- Brentford (A) – December 2
- Tottenham (A) – December 6
- Real Madrid (H) – December 9
- Bournemouth (H) – December 13
- Manchester United (H) – December 20
That is not just a run. It is a gauntlet. Title rivals, European heavyweights, hostile away grounds and precious league points all crammed into eight punishing weeks.
For Arsenal, this is the moment when squad planning, tactical flexibility and sheer resilience are tested. Saka has carried so much of the creative and emotional load for this side. Now they must prove they can survive – and still compete at the highest level – without him.
