Victor Osimhen: The Perfect Striker for Manchester United
Victor Osimhen has spent years battering down doors across Europe. Now, some of Manchester United’s greatest strikers are practically begging the club to let him kick the next one off its hinges at Old Trafford.
This is not a sudden obsession. It’s the culmination of a journey that started quietly in Germany, roared into life in Belgium and France, and then exploded in Italy and Turkey.
A career built on goals
Osimhen’s European story began at Wolfsburg, where minutes were scarce and patience ran thin. His real breakthrough came on loan at Charleroi in Belgium, where he turned raw potential into something far more serious: a reliable, ruthless goalscorer.
From there, Lille became the launchpad. A productive 2019-20 season in France showcased his pace, aggression and penalty-box instinct, and it was enough to convince Napoli to make a major move. The pressure rose, so did his numbers.
In Naples, Osimhen didn’t just score. He delivered history. Across the 2022-23 campaign, he found the net 31 times in all competitions, spearheading a side that ended a 33-year wait for the Serie A title. That kind of return, in that kind of environment, does not go unnoticed.
Premier League clubs certainly noticed. United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all weighed up moves, studying a forward who combined power with relentless running and a cold edge in front of goal.
Instead, his path took him to Turkey. At Galatasaray, any doubts about consistency were shredded. Sixty-five goals in 78 appearances is the record of a striker who treats the penalty area as his own property. Different league, same outcome: he scores.
Built for England?
At 27, Osimhen looks ready-made for the Premier League. He’s quick, he’s strong, and he finishes with conviction. Defenders hate playing against forwards like that. Managers build systems around them.
Put that idea to Andy Cole, and the former United striker doesn’t hesitate. Speaking to GOAL in association with Unibet, the 1999 Treble winner stripped the argument back to its basics.
“He does. He scores goals,” Cole said. “He scored goals in Italy and he's scoring goals in Turkey as well.”
Cole did not pretend it was as simple as writing a cheque. He pointed to the usual complications: the move, the adaptation, the personal side of a transfer that fans rarely see.
“There’s many different factors in signing a player from a respective country,” he added. “It's not all about just the salary or the transfer fee. There could be many different things that go on.
“If he does come to the Premier League, which I think he will be very good in the Premier League, you never know who he'll go to.”
That last line will sting a few United supporters. Because while half of Europe has been watching Osimhen, some of Old Trafford’s most vocal alumni believe he should be wearing red.
United legends make the case
Patrice Evra has never been shy about what he thinks United need. Asked by GOAL what the club must prioritise, the former captain didn’t dress it up.
“A striker, someone who scores a goal. I think that's what I'm looking at,” he said. “That's why for me, Osimhen is the best. He’s a perfect example.”
No talk of systems. No talk of “profiles” or “projects”. Just goals. And Osimhen.
Louis Saha, another ex-United forward who knows the weight of the No. 9 shirt, went even further. He sees not only the goals, but the personality behind them.
“I really like Victor Osimhen. He's definitely got the character, he's got the quality,” Saha said. “He’s also got good European pedigree: he was a success in France, he was a champion in Italy with Napoli and he’s gone to Turkey with Galatasaray and been brilliant, a move that he probably didn't want, let's be honest.”
Saha’s admiration runs deeper than statistics. It’s about how Osimhen has handled every step up, every new demand.
“He’s scored goals at every level. He’s got Champions League experience, and further more, he’s got the type of personality and charisma that this United squad could really benefit from.
“I think he would be a transformational signing for Manchester United. If you think about the pressure that he was under at Napoli, firing the club to its first title in 33 years, then he’s the perfect man to lead the line for Manchester United.
“I think he would have a huge impact at United. I would love to see the club hierarchy move for him, I think he is exactly what we need.”
The missing piece?
Strip away the nostalgia and sentiment, and the argument from United’s old guard is brutally simple: this is a club crying out for a reliable, fearless centre-forward. Osimhen has spent his entire European career proving he is exactly that.
He has goals, he has scars, he has medals. He has carried expectation in Naples and delivered. He has embraced the chaos of Istanbul and thrived.
Now the question hangs in the air: if Manchester United truly want a striker to redefine their attack, how much longer can they watch Victor Osimhen from a distance?
