Troy Parrott Shines in Betis XI, Leading to Victory Over Getafe

Troy Parrott didn’t ease his way back into Real Betis’ starting line-up. He tore into it.

Restored to Manuel Pellegrini’s XI for the La Liga meeting with Getafe on Thursday night, the Ireland striker almost produced a goal of the season contender inside five minutes.

Spotting David Soria off his line after pouncing on a loose pass near halfway, Parrott went for audacity over safety, hanging a long, looping effort towards the Getafe net. Soria scrambled, stretched, and just about clawed it away with his fingertips. The Estadio La Cartuja rose in anticipation; it stayed on its feet in appreciation.

Betis were on the front foot from the outset. Getafe, 15th in the table and content to sit deep, dropped ever closer to their own box as wave after wave of green-and-white pressure rolled in. Antony twice lashed efforts over the bar when well placed, the home crowd groaning each time as chances went begging.

The pressure finally told on the stroke of half-time – and Parrott was at the heart of it.

Breaking from their own half, Abde Ezzalzouli drove into midfield and released Antony racing down the flank. Betis had Getafe retreating, disorganised, exactly where they wanted them. Cutting infield, Antony found Parrott arriving centrally at the edge of the area.

Parrott didn’t hesitate. One touch, head up, and he swept the ball back across goal into the path of the onrushing Abde. The winger drilled his finish low past Soria, the goalkeeper beaten this time with no reprieve. Betis finally had the lead their dominance demanded, Abde on the scoresheet and Parrott credited with the assist.

After the break, the pattern barely changed. Getafe stayed compact, Betis probed. Isco tried to thread passes through packed blue shirts, Abde looked to isolate his full-back, Parrott worked the channels and dropped into pockets to link play. The second goal, though, refused to come.

Pellegrini eventually turned to his bench. Around the midway point of the second half, Parrott, Isco and Abde all made way as the Chilean coach reshaped his attack in search of a killer blow. The change brought fresh legs, not fresh goals.

That kept the tension high right to the end. Getafe, emboldened by Betis’ failure to add a cushion, finally stepped forward in the closing stages. Crosses began to drop into the Betis box, set pieces invited anxiety, and the home crowd’s early swagger turned into something closer to nerves.

Betis held firm. The 1-0 scoreline survived a late Getafe surge and the final whistle confirmed three hard-earned points rather than the comfortable victory the first half had promised.

The win lifts Betis to third in La Liga, level on 15 points with second-placed Real Madrid, separated only by goal difference. Barcelona, perfect so far with six wins from six, sit three points clear at the summit.

For Parrott, it was another significant step in a growing Betis story. Two weeks ago he came off the bench at Estadio La Cartuja to score the winner against Real Madrid, handing José Mourinho’s side their first defeat of the season in his very first home appearance.

Now he has his first assist in Betis colours and another starting berth under his belt. If this is the platform, how high can he climb in Spain this season?
