Saudi Arabia Halts $2.5 Billion Neom Stadium Project Amid Economic Challenges Ahead of 2034 World Cup

Plans for the $2.5 billion Neom stadium, set to be a centerpiece in Saudi Arabia's bid for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, have been suspended due to economic constraints. This venue was intended to be a highlight of the first-ever 48-team World Cup hosted by a single country.

Neom Stadium Construction Put On Hold

The futuristic arena located in the Neom megacity, designed to hold 46,000 spectators, has been classified as 'on hold' with no clear timeline for resumption. The project is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider plan to build 15 stadiums for the tournament, but this delay raises questions about meeting those commitments.

  • Project cost: $2.5 billion (£1.9 billion / €2.2 billion)
  • Capacity: 46,000 seats
  • Status: Suspended indefinitely

Shift in National Spending Priorities

This pause is linked to adjustments in Saudi spending under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 plan. Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), said earlier in the year that The Line development, where the stadium was to be located, is no longer a top priority before 2030.

Saudi Officials and FIFA Remain Confident

Despite setbacks, including the suspension of the Mukaab skyscraper project in Riyadh, Saudi authorities insist the preparations for the 2034 World Cup are progressing well. The Saudi World Cup 2034 Hosting Higher Authority confirmed significant infrastructure work is ongoing, and FIFA has previously praised the kingdom’s overall tournament proposal as remarkable.

Economic Pressures Affecting Plans

Saudi Arabia is currently dealing with economic challenges, such as a projected budget deficit and a 3.6% decline in real GDP driven by falling oil revenues. Regional instability, including attacks near Aramco facilities by Yemen's Houthi rebels, has added to the pressure. For Mohammed bin Salman, successfully hosting the 2034 World Cup remains an important goal to boost the nation's economic profile and global standing.
