Sam Edozie Requests Transfer from Southampton Ahead of Deadline

Sam Edozie has submitted a transfer request at Southampton, revealing he wants out before Tuesday night’s deadline after what he describes as a year of blocked exits and missed chances.

The 23-year-old winger took his frustration public with a statement on Instagram, saying he has received “multiple offers” from clubs across Europe but has been unable to turn any of them into a move.

Last summer, he said, he had the chance to leave. The club said no. January brought another opening. Again, no green light. Now, with another window closing in, Edozie has decided to force the issue.

“This summer, there have once again been multiple offers from clubs across Europe,” he wrote, before claiming Southampton’s demands have made a deal almost impossible. According to Edozie, the club have requested as much as 50% of any future transfer fee, a clause he says has put off potential buyers and “made those opportunities extremely difficult to pursue.”

Southampton have been approached for comment.

Edozie arrived at St Mary’s from Manchester City in September 2022, a young winger with Premier League pedigree and England youth caps, billed as a long-term project. Across two seasons he has started 29 games and made another 57 appearances from the bench, flashes of promise without a sustained run.

The lack of consistent game time sits at the heart of his push to leave.

He made it clear in his statement that he does not feel he is getting “the minutes I need” at Southampton and framed his stance around the short shelf life of a professional career. “A football career is short,” he said, “and I believe it is important I now have the opportunity to go somewhere I can play regularly, continue to develop and make the most of my career as a player.”

For now, his future technically lies away from the south coast. The former England Under-20 international is on loan at Belgian side Anderlecht for the 2024-2025 season, a move designed to bring exactly the regular football he craves.

Yet the tone of his message goes beyond a standard loanee seeking minutes. It reads like a line in the sand between a player who feels time slipping away and a club determined to protect their asset on their terms.

With the deadline looming and interest on the continent already on the table, the next few days will show whether Southampton blink, or whether Edozie’s career remains tied to a club he is now openly trying to leave.
