Raul Rosas Jr. Recalls Shocking UFC Vegas 121 Finish Against Raoni Barcelos

At UFC Vegas 121, Raul Rosas Jr., aged 21, scored a dramatic fifth-round knockout over veteran Raoni Barcelos. The victory marked Rosas's first main-event win in the UFC but came with a chilling moment that left many unsettled. Barcelos appeared to lose consciousness during a takedown before hitting the mat. He was stretchered out and taken to the hospital but was later confirmed stable, alert, and able to move, according to the UFC.

Initial Reaction: "I Didn’t Know if He Died"

On The Ariel Helwani Show, Rosas described his reaction to the terrifying scene. "For a second, I didn’t know if he died," he said. "But when I calmed down and saw he was breathing, I thought, ‘Okay, he’s not dead for sure.’ That brought me some peace, but I was still praying he’d wake up and return to his family."

The shocking finish cast a shadow over an intense fight, despite Rosas extending his UFC win streak to six. "It was scary because of that," he said, "but yes, I was happy about my performance. He’ll probably feel sad about the result, but I think he’ll be happy about the fight because we both gave it our all."

Contact and Condition

Rosas has reached out to Barcelos but has yet to hear back. Barcelos reportedly regained consciousness that night and moved his limbs. Statements have come from both Barcelos and his coaches since then. The fight was a demanding five-round battle between bantamweight contenders.

Rosas remains puzzled about what caused the abrupt end. "From my side, I didn’t hit his head," he said, referencing video replays. "I want to know if he remembers what happened because only he can say." He also noted the grueling pace. "In the fourth round, I caught my breath while he was on my back trying to finish me with a submission. He was gasping for air too, so when the fourth ended, he looked wobbly. I rested more on the floor, but he worked hard down there."

Final Round Push and Possible Causes

Rosas felt he had to push harder in the last round. He mentioned landing a light punch to Barcelos’s head before going for the finishing takedown. "My corner told me to try that. When I grabbed him, he felt weak like his body was done," Rosas recalled. "I got more wind going for the legs and felt like I already won. I took him down and knew I would finish."

He found it unfortunate Barcelos was out when hitting the ground but suspects the fighter may have been unconscious earlier. "Now that I see he was out before, maybe that’s why he felt so weak."

Judges’ Score and Fight Pressure

Barcelos was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards, putting him in position to win by decision despite the final-round scenario. Rosas admitted the pressure after Barcelos’s dominant fourth round was intense. One judge even scored that round 10-8 in favor of Barcelos.

"I was behind going into the fifth, but in my mind, the scoring was different," Rosas said. "I thought Round 1 was mine, Round 2 could have gone either way, and three and four were his rounds. So it might have been 2-2. Either way, if it went to the judges, he’d probably win because the fourth round was 10-8. That’s why I had to finish it. I didn’t want any doubt about winning or losing, so I knew I had to go for the finish in the fifth."

Career Impact

This win improved Rosas’s professional record to 13-1 overall and 7-1 inside the UFC. It marks his second victory over ranked opponents since entering the promotion at just 18 years old in late 2018.
