Manchester United's Transfer Dilemma: Striker and Left-Back Targets

Manchester United are deep into a midfield rebuild. Yet, as the transfer window ticks towards its final days, the real tension at Old Trafford is building around a different question: who leads the line if Joshua Zirkzee walks out?

INEOS have spent the summer reshaping the core of Erik ten Hag’s squad. Carlos Baleba from Brighton, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea have all arrived to stiffen the midfield. Karl Darlow has come in on a free to provide back-up in goal, while young defender Tynan Thompson has been prised from Tottenham in a deal worth around £8m.

The spine is changing. The priorities, though, are shifting by the hour.

Zirkzee’s future opens the door

Manchester United have long earmarked left-back as the position most likely to be strengthened before the deadline. That remains the case. Yet the entire attacking plan could be ripped up if Zirkzee leaves.

Ben Jacobs has made it clear: United will move for a striker if their No. 9 goes. The club, he says, are “alert” to the need for a replacement, ready to pivot in the final days – or even final hours – of the window. If they can’t bring one in, they will simply refuse to sanction Zirkzee’s exit. It is that binary.

The problem for United is that the market around Zirkzee is heating up fast.

With Como closing in on Moise Kean, Fiorentina have pushed into ‘advanced talks’ with United over the Netherlands international, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Italian side see an opening and are moving with intent. Tottenham and several Serie A clubs are watching the same situation closely.

If Fiorentina get their way, United will need a new striker. And quickly.

Matanovic: Mandzukic’s heir on the move?

That is where Igor Matanovic enters the frame.

The Freiburg forward, who hit 11 Bundesliga goals last season, is drawing serious attention. In Croatia, he is already being talked about as the ‘heir to Mario Mandzukic’ – a powerful, hard-running presence who can lead the line with authority.

Fiorentina like him. Gazzetta dello Sport’s Thursday print edition, relayed by Sport Witness, describes a move for Matanovic as “difficult but not impossible” for the Serie A club. The difficulty? Manchester United and Tottenham have arrived at the table.

Interest from the Premier League is complicating Fiorentina’s pursuit. United, sensing the possibility of losing Zirkzee, are weighing Matanovic as a potential solution. Tottenham, busy reshaping their own attack, are also in the conversation.

The dominoes are clear. Omar Marmoush is expected to move to Tottenham. Fiorentina are pushing hard for Zirkzee. If those deals fall into place, United could suddenly find a clean run at Matanovic.

The question is whether they are ready to pull the trigger.

Left-back: Balde, loans and a long-term plan

While the striker plot twists around Zirkzee and Matanovic, United’s search for a left-back continues in parallel.

Jacobs says a left-back remains the priority. Alejandro Balde has been offered around, with Barcelona understood to be open to a sale at around €45m. On paper, that is a marquee solution. In reality, United are treading carefully.

The club would prefer a loan with an option to buy, rather than committing to an outright purchase now. Part of that caution is strategic. United want to keep their powder dry for 2027, when they plan a serious move for their top target in the position: Lewis Hall.

Hall is not thought to be available this late in the window, which leaves United with a dilemma. Do they invest heavily now, potentially blocking a future move for Hall, or bring in a stopgap and hold their nerve until next year?

Balde remains one possibility, but only on United’s terms. A loan structure, an option rather than an obligation, flexibility preserved for the long-term plan.

Other names have been pushed their way. Jorge Salinas. David Raum. Options, not yet priorities. As it stands, nothing has advanced.

So United stand at a crossroads on two fronts. A striker plan that may hinge on Fiorentina’s pursuit of Zirkzee, and a left-back search shaped as much by 2027 as by this weekend.

The window is closing. Will they gamble on the future, or pay for certainty now?
