Manchester United Intensifies Striker Search with Alexander Sorloth

Manchester United’s late-window hunt for a centre-forward has taken a fresh twist, with Alexander Sorloth emerging as a serious option from Atletico Madrid.

United, who have already splashed £70million on Carlos Baleba from Brighton, are under pressure to land both a striker and a left-back before Tuesday’s deadline. Michael Carrick wants a backup No 9 to replace Joshua Zirkzee and fresh competition for Luke Shaw on the left side of defence. Time is tight. The needs are obvious.

Zirkzee, though, has already set the dominoes in motion.

Zirkzee exit opens a gap

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Zirkzee has given the green light to a return to Serie A with Fiorentina. The Italian club have sent United a loan proposal that includes an option to buy next summer, a structure that would hand United some financial flexibility now but leave a hole at centre-forward.

United have been doing their homework. Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic has been assessed. So has Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is open to a move. Both fit the profile of a physical presence who can lead the line and relieve some of the burden on Benjamin Sesko.

Now a different name has landed on the desk at Old Trafford.

Sorloth on the table

As reported by TEAMtalk, intermediaries have offered United the chance to sign Sorloth from Atletico. At 6ft 5in, the Norwegian is a classic target man, a specialist No 9 with the numbers to back up his reputation: 175 goals in 475 senior games.

He ticks the boxes United have drawn up for this window. A pure centre-forward. Aerially dominant. Happy to play as the focal point, but capable of rotating with Sesko and giving Carrick a genuine alternative up front.

Crucially, Sorloth is understood to be open to leaving Atletico. He would also be willing to return to the Premier League, where he previously spent an underwhelming spell with Crystal Palace between January 2018 and September 2020. That period brought just 20 appearances for the Eagles, padded out by loans to Gent and Trabzonspor.

A move to Old Trafford would hand him the stage he never really had in England first time around.

Atletico’s stance and the striker dominoes

Atletico are prepared to sanction Sorloth’s exit for the right price. His contract runs until June 2028, so there is no desperation in Madrid, but Diego Simeone’s side want a replacement lined up before they cash in.

They are weighing moves for Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus and Juventus striker Jonathan David as potential successors, a sign of how they view the importance of the position. Any progress there will directly influence how quickly Sorloth’s situation can move.

The wider market around Atletico is already tense. Barcelona and Arsenal are still circling Julian Alvarez, another of Atleti’s attacking assets, but the club are adamant they will keep him. Alvarez has publicly pushed for a transfer, a stance that has infuriated sections of the Atletico support and only sharpened the focus on what happens next in their forward line.

United’s late-window calculation

For United, the equation is simple but urgent. Lose Zirkzee and the squad looks light up front. Keep him and the pressure eases, but Fiorentina’s interest has already shifted the mood around Carrick’s attack.

Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, Laurie Whitwell underlined the likely shape of United’s business in the final days of the window, saying: “Loan is what I have heard in terms of incoming.” Andy Mitten echoed the sense that movement is coming, adding that the chances of new arrivals are “increasing” and warning that “if you lose a striker, United look light up top.”

That is the reality driving United’s interest in every credible No 9 placed in front of them. Sorloth is not the only name on the list, but he is one who clearly fits the brief.
