Manchester United Eye Alexander Sorloth Move as Striker Search Intensifies

Manchester United’s late-window hunt for a centre-forward has taken a familiar Nordic twist, with Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth emerging as a serious option in the final days of the window.

Intermediaries have offered the Norway international to United, and the club are now weighing up whether the 30-year-old fits the profile they want to slot in alongside Benjamin Sesko rather than simply pad out the squad.

United reset after Zirkzee exit

Joshua Zirkzee’s move to Fiorentina has forced a rethink at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick and the recruitment team still want another central presence in attack, but they are being selective. If the right player does not appear, there is a strong chance they simply walk away.

Sorloth, though, ticks a lot of the boxes on their list.

He is open to leaving Atletico this summer and would welcome a return to the Premier League, having previously had a spell at Crystal Palace. Since moving to Spain he has rebuilt his reputation, using his size, aerial strength and penalty-box instincts to good effect. Across his career he has racked up 175 goals in 475 matches – the kind of experience United feel could complement, not block, Sesko.

The brief is clear: a genuine No.9 who can play through the middle, offer a different physical dimension and handle the demands of English football. Sorloth fits that description.

Atletico’s dilemma and a crowded striker market

Atletico are prepared to let Sorloth go, but only on their terms. The Spanish side want a replacement lined up before sanctioning any exit, and their own striker search is dragging several big names into the same late-window storm.

They intend to keep Julian Alvarez, but are still hunting another forward. Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus is on their list, as is former Lille striker Jonathan David. Juventus are also circling around David, exploring a complex deal that could involve Sorloth and Nico Gonzalez as part of an exchange. Those talks are proving anything but straightforward.

Amid that, United’s name keeps surfacing. David has also been offered to Carrick’s side, who are considering whether his movement and finishing could give them a different type of solution in the final third.

Sorloth is not the only name in United’s notebook.

The club have held conversations with Crystal Palace over Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr, though both deals are described as complicated at this stage. Age, cost, role and squad balance are all being weighed carefully.

United have also cast the net towards a younger tier of forwards. Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic, Hoffenheim’s Fisnik Asllani and RB Leipzig’s Conrad Harder have all been discussed internally as potential longer-term projects rather than immediate headline signings.

For now, though, Sorloth stands out as the experienced option ready to walk straight into a Premier League dressing room.

Haaland connection and a window to watch

There is another intriguing layer to the story. Sorloth is a close friend of Manchester City star Erling Haaland, his international strike partner with Norway. The prospect of the two being reunited in the same city, but on opposite sides of one of football’s fiercest divides, adds extra spice to any potential move.

United’s stance remains firm: they want the right forward to dovetail with Sesko, not a panic signing to appease the calendar. With Atletico juggling their own striker puzzle and several names in play across Europe, the final days of the window will decide whether Sorloth trades Madrid for Manchester – and turns a friendship into a derby storyline.
