Manchester City Faces Severe Premier League Punishment That Could Lead to Relegation

Manchester City is staring down a grim future if their appeal against financial misconduct charges fails. The club was found guilty of 114 financial breaches over nine years, spanning from 2009 to 2018, and has been locked in a legal fight with the Premier League since 2023.

The appeal process is currently underway following a harsh statement from the Premier League in September. Insiders speaking to the Daily Mail have revealed what punishment might be imposed should the verdict remain unchanged.

Possible Punishments Loom Over Manchester City

Reports indicate the Premier League aims to announce penalties before the appeal concludes, which must happen by December 25. The final decision from the commission is expected around mid-January.

Speculated consequences include point deductions, transfer restrictions, or even removal from the top tier. Although expulsion seems unlikely, a hefty points deduction is anticipated that could effectively guarantee relegation to the EFL Championship. Dropping the club directly to League Two would provoke chaos for both the Premier League and EFL, a scenario officials want to avoid.

Journalist Oliver Holt cites sources suggesting the punishment will likely consist of a severe points deduction combined with a significant fine. Such a penalty could keep the Sky Blues in the second tier for at least one season. While the EFL isn’t obligated to accept this sanction, it probably will, allowing the club time to rebuild sustainably.

European Ban Possibility Adds to City's Troubles

Adding to the turmoil, Colombian journalist Cesar Augusto Londono recently claimed UEFA is considering a major European ban for the 2023 Champions League winners. On X, he stated:

"UEFA is reportedly close to announcing that, if Manchester City is found guilty after its appeal, it will face a 7 to 10-year expulsion from all European competitions including the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. The initial finding noted 115 financial violations."

If relegated to the Championship and forced to remain there another year, City might be sidelined from European qualification for about three years. A ban lasting seven to ten years would extend their absence further. This raises questions about player commitment, as few may want to miss out on Champions League glory to stay with the club during such a prolonged suspension.
