Manchester City Player Ratings After 4-2 Loss to Paris Saint-Germain: Haaland’s Goals Not Enough Amid Defensive Collapse

Manchester City faced a tough 4-2 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, with defensive lapses in the first half proving decisive. Despite Erling Haaland scoring twice, City’s defensive struggles under coach Enzo Maresca cost them dearly.

The Etihad Stadium witnessed a chaotic opening 45 minutes where City’s defense was repeatedly torn apart on the break. Goals from Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Vitinha put PSG 3-0 up at halftime. City's failure to maintain a compact central defense allowed PSG to easily bypass the high defensive line, leaving City with a daunting task in the second half.

Haaland showed his usual sharpness by netting two goals in the second half to cut the deficit, but a goal from Maghnes Akliouche early after the hour mark stopped any hopes of a comeback. Even though City controlled 54% possession and fired 27 shots, their inability to handle PSG's fast counterattacks highlighted tactical flaws that Maresca will need to address.

Goalkeeper & Defence

  • Gianluigi Donnarumma - 4/10: A tough night against his old rivals. He made 5 saves but was exposed during PSG’s early barrage. His positioning on Vitinha’s long-range strike raised questions, and he struggled to organize a backline caught out repeatedly.
  • Abdukodir Khusanov - 5/10: Struggled to keep pace with Dembele and Doue, part of a defense that failed to track deep runners but contributed to City’s buildup late on.
  • Josko Gvardiol - 5/10: His adventurous overlaps left the left flank open for PSG attacks. He also failed to hold the defensive line, helping create space for PSG’s second goal.
  • Ruben Dias - 4/10: The captain had a poor game before being substituted at halftime. Slow to respond to Dembele’s movement, he lost the defensive line, contributing to the heavy halftime deficit.
  • Marc Guehi - 5/10: Slightly steadier than Dias but overwhelmed by PSG’s volume of attackers. Made clearances but lacked commanding presence.

Midfield

  • Antoine Semenyo - 5/10: Played deeper than usual but failed to influence the game, offering neither defensive cover nor creative spark before being replaced after 61 minutes.
  • Elliot Anderson - 6/10: Showed technical ability and energy but was often bypassed during the breaks leading to PSG’s goals.
  • Rayan Cherki - 4/10: Disappointing in the number 10 role, unable to connect midfield and attack, crowded out by PSG midfielders, leading to a halftime substitution.
  • Enzo Fernandez - 6/10: Tried to open vertical lanes and kept play moving but lacked the defensive aggression needed in a frantic first half; subbed off late in the game.

Attack

  • Jeremy Doku - 5/10: Inconsistent, showed promise against his marker but struggled with final delivery, resulting in a halftime substitution.
  • Erling Haaland - 8/10: The standout performer, clinical with two second-half goals (53rd and 75th minutes) that briefly revived City's hopes. Thrived on service from substitutes Ndiaye and Bouaddi.

Substitutes & Manager

  • Matheus Nunes - 6/10: Came on at halftime, added energy to midfield and helped maintain pressure during City’s better moments.
  • Ayyoub Bouaddi - 7/10: Bright impact off the bench, assisted Haaland’s second goal and looked composed despite his youth.
  • Iliman Ndiaye - 7/10: Changed the game's pace after coming on, providing the assist for Haaland’s first goal and adding a direct threat.
  • Nico O Reilly - N/A: Entered in the 90th minute, too late to influence the outcome.
  • Enzo Maresca - 4/10: Tactical setup failed badly in the first half, leaving the defense vulnerable to PSG counter-attacks. The triple substitution improved play but couldn’t undo early damage.
