Manchester City Nears Enzo Fernandez Transfer as Deadline Approaches

Manchester City are pushing a dramatic late move for Enzo Fernandez after striking an initial agreement with Chelsea in the final hours of the transfer window.

Club officials from the Premier League champions opened direct talks with Chelsea on Monday over the 25-year-old midfielder, accelerating a deal that had been simmering in the background. The breakthrough leaves Fernandez racing the clock, with the window due to shut at 11pm local time.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio confirmed that City have reached an initial agreement over the transfer, clearing the way for the Argentina international to undergo a medical once the final details are signed off. For now, Fernandez waits – contract ready, suitcase effectively packed – for the green light.

Reunion with Maresca

A reunion is at the heart of this story. Fernandez is preparing to link up again with Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea boss who succeeded Pep Guardiola at the Etihad in the summer. Their relationship was strong enough that Fernandez publicly criticised Chelsea’s hierarchy when Maresca was dismissed back in January.

“I don't understand it,” Fernandez told Mexican network TUDN at the time, openly questioning the decision. “Sometimes there are things we don't understand as players, and how and in what way they try to manage matters.”

The frustration ran deeper than a polite disagreement.

“Clearly it was a departure that hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, as it cuts everything off suddenly,” he said. “We had an identity. He gave us a system, although according to the nature of football, things are sometimes good and sometimes bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing.”

Those words now echo differently as City move to place the World Cup winner back under Maresca’s command, this time in Manchester and with a title-winning squad around him.

Chelsea's Response

Chelsea, by contrast, have tried to keep the noise down. Fernandez was left out of the squad for Sunday’s clash with Brighton, a decision that only fuelled speculation that his Stamford Bridge career was nearing its end. Manager Xabi Alonso stayed guarded when pressed on the midfielder’s future.

Asked whether Fernandez had already played his last game for the club, Alonso replied: “We'll see. We want what's best for the team, which is why we made the decision against Luton and today, and anything that happens before Tuesday evening, we need to be aware of how things will develop.”

He refused to shut the door, but he did not exactly slam it open either.

“We're not sure, we're preparing for all scenarios, but I'm certain that whatever happens from Wednesday, we'll have a good enough squad to compete in all the Premier League matches,” he added.

So the situation is stark. City have an agreement in place and a manager eager to rebuild a familiar midfield axis. Chelsea have a valuable asset on the brink of departure and a coach planning for life with or without him.

The clock is ticking. If the paperwork lands in time, Enzo Fernandez will swap blue for blue – and step into an Etihad dressing room where expectations, and old loyalties, leave no room for hesitation.
