Why Manchester United and Others Should Watch Paris Brunner as Monaco's Rising Star Impresses Germany’s Klopp

Paris Brunner began his path to football stardom at just 14 when he joined Borussia Dortmund's youth academy in 2020. Over four years, he netted an impressive 56 goals in 74 appearances across Dortmund's youth teams. His talent didn't go unnoticed on the international stage either.

In summer 2023, Germany triumphed at the Under-17 European Championship, with Brunner sharing the Golden Boot by scoring four goals and earning the Player of the Tournament title. Later that year, he was again pivotal as Germany won the U17 World Cup in Indonesia, scoring five goals including one in the final against France, which earned him the Golden Ball award.

Edin Terzic, former Dortmund manager, praised Brunner as a highly gifted player. Despite efforts to secure his future at Dortmund, no full agreement was reached, leading the club to sell Brunner to Monaco for €4 million in August 2024 to avoid losing him for free.

"Monaco showed me a clear, sporting path, how they want to plan with me and develop me," Brunner told Sport BILD. "This appreciation and clarity immediately convinced and impressed me. I had the feeling that they really wanted me."

Early Professional Challenges and Promise

Upon arrival at Monaco, Brunner was loaned to Belgian side Cercle Brugge to gain senior experience and play in European competitions. The adjustment proved tough, especially under coach Miron Muslic’s demanding high-press style, which limited Brunner to just two substitute appearances early on.

An injury sidelined him from mid-December to late February, but when fit, he made moments count—scoring six goals in eight starts. Notably, he troubled Hearts’ defense in the Conference League, helping secure a 2-0 home win, and scored a crucial header equalizer against Istanbul Basaksehir.

His explosive pace, skilled footwork, and keen goal sense made him a constant threat, although his decision-making near goal needed refining. Monaco decided to integrate him into their first team for the 2025-26 season rather than send him out on loan again.

World-Class Talent Despite Setbacks

Breaking into Monaco’s starting lineup was tough. Brunner found himself behind Mika Biereth and top striker Folarin Balogun. Reports suggested then-coach Adi Hutter had doubts about Brunner’s attitude, limiting him to two substitute league appearances before being replaced by Sebastien Pocognoli, who also gave him minimal game time.

Frustrated yet resilient, Brunner stayed positive and excelled for Germany’s U20 team, scoring eight goals in four Elite League matches, including a brace against Italy and a hat-trick versus Romania.

U20 coach Hannes Wolf said, "Paris thrives when he feels absolute trust from the staff. What he does at youth level for Germany shows his character. He leads and delivers. His goal efficiency is world-class for his age."

Stepping Up Under Filipe Luis

Monaco replaced Pocognoli with Filipe Luis in June. The new manager immediately recognized Brunner’s potential and gave him opportunities, especially with key forwards injured.

Brunner started Monaco’s Champions League qualifier first leg against Gornik Zabrze, scoring the decisive third goal in a 3-2 victory. Since then, he has added five goals in six appearances, including a standout brace in a 2-0 win over Marseille. One goal showcased his speed and composure as he raced from midfield, dribbled past defenders, and calmly finished.

Luis called that solo effort "a masterpiece" and praised Brunner's attitude: "He does his talking on the pitch with goals, pressing, defending, and learning. I like players like him."

Controversial Celebration and Consequences

Brunner scored a stunning 25-yard strike to earn a 1-1 draw at Strasbourg but sparked controversy with a throat-slice celebration aimed at the opposing fans. He explained later that he reacted emotionally after hearing personal insults about his family and did not intend disrespect.

"I wouldn’t say I regret it, but it wasn’t the message I wanted to send," he said. Luis defended him as a passionate young player who immediately apologized.

The LFP handed Brunner a suspended four-match ban, causing him to miss two Ligue 1 games after the international break. Monaco, leading the table by five points over PSG, could ill afford to lose their top scorer due to discipline issues.

Past Troubles and Dortmund's Continued Interest

Brunner’s career has faced turbulence before, including a suspension by Dortmund over an incident involving alleged criminal damage at a party and issues with punctuality and discipline. He missed chances to impress Dortmund's first team after breaking curfew during a training camp.

Despite this, Dortmund’s sporting director Lars Ricken recently stated that the door remains open for Brunner, praising his on-field performances and character.

"I don’t know if he could have progressed as much with us considering our attackers, but he’s a great guy," Ricken said. "Even with stories around him, he always performed well on the pitch. The doors are not closed for Paris."

Ideal Target for Premier League Clubs

Brunner’s rising stock has caught attention beyond Monaco. Although not initially called up by Jurgen Klopp’s senior Germany squad, Klopp acknowledged Brunner’s progress and hinted at involvement with the U21s.

Brunner made an impressive debut for Germany U21, scoring twice in a 4-0 win over Latvia in European Championship qualifying. U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo expressed a desire not to slow his development, suggesting he will be a regular starter or soon join the senior squad.

Reports indicate Liverpool scouts are monitoring Brunner, but Manchester United would be wise to pursue him, especially given their current striker shortage. With Benjamin Sesko sidelined and Joshua Zirkzee lacking sharpness, Brunner offers an affordable option at a market value of €15 million.

His athleticism, instincts in the box, and ability to play as a winger make him suited to the Premier League’s demands. For a club needing a forward who excels in one-on-one situations and converts limited chances, Brunner stands out.

Experience is limited, but his potential outweighs the risks. Monaco’s new talisman could be the attacking spark Manchester United requires before Europe's biggest clubs circle.
