Maduka Okoye Earns Udinese Player of the Season Award

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been named Udinese's Player of the Season for the 2025/26 Serie A campaign after a standout year in goal. This accolade will be presented at the 26th Galà del Calcio Triveneto event in Vicenza on October 12, although Okoye is expected to miss the ceremony due to club commitments.

Strong Season Performance

Okoye secured his place as Udinese's first-choice goalkeeper throughout the season, delivering impressive performances including 10 clean sheets across 30 Serie A appearances. Among these shutouts were three consecutive games without conceding goals against Genoa, Como, and AC Milan. His contributions helped stabilize Udinese's defense despite a rocky start to the season.

Early Challenges Overcome

The 27-year-old began the campaign sidelined by a suspension linked to accusations of deliberately picking up a yellow card during the previous season's match against Lazio. After serving his suspension, Okoye returned to the squad and maintained his starting position for the remainder of the campaign.

International Competition

His form at club level earned him call-ups to Nigeria’s squads for Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Despite being included, Okoye did not start those matches, with coach Eric Chelle opting for Stanley Nwabali of Chippa United instead. This highlights a current tussle for the goalkeeper spot within the national team.

Contract and Future Prospects

Okoye remains under contract with Udinese until the end of the 2027/28 season, giving him more time to build on his performances and vie for a regular role with the Super Eagles. The award from Udinese reinforces his value at club level as he looks ahead to continuing his career in Italy.
