Luis Enrique Urges PSG to Aim for Real Madrid's Champions League Threepeat

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has set his sights on leading the club to a third consecutive Champions League title, matching Real Madrid’s historic achievement. After securing back-to-back European titles, Enrique is determined to keep PSG at the top of Europe’s premier competition.

Spanish Coach Targets Historic Threepeat

The 56-year-old manager, who took charge of PSG in July 2023, has already guided the French club to two straight continental victories along with three Ligue 1 championships. Real Madrid’s milestone came after their win over Liverpool in the 2018 final, and now Enrique believes PSG can reach the same heights. The reigning champions kicked off their current campaign with an impressive 6-1 victory against Slovan Bratislava.

Maintaining Drive Amid Domestic and European Success

Despite dominating both France and Europe recently, Enrique's ambition remains sharp. His squad faces tough challenges ahead, including matches against Manchester City and his former team, Barcelona, whom he led to Champions League glory in 2015.

"We’ve won it twice in a row, but that’s no reason to stop," Enrique told PSG’s official site. "We’re built to play in the Champions League. We have an extra incentive: to try and achieve something that only Real Madrid has managed so far. It’s a special goal."

He also acknowledged the strength of their rivals: "These [Man City and Barcelona] are two teams that love winning the Champions League, who have already won it and are among the favourites. There are six, seven or eight teams capable of winning this Champions League. We’re one of them, but it’ll be tough and we’re not the clear favourites."

Contract Extension Adds Pressure and Expectations

Enrique recently extended his contract until 2030, having already collected 13 major trophies with PSG. Reflecting on his arrival, he said the primary aim was to make history, emphasizing the importance of the Champions League above all other titles.

"That was our primary objective when we arrived here: to make history. Everyone knew the club had already won major trophies, but there was no trophy more important to us than the Champions League. For me as a manager, just as for the players, the desire to win constantly is an essential characteristic of the very highest level."

Discussing the new deal’s demands, Enrique added: "I’ve extended my contract and now I’m under even more pressure to show that I’m ready to carry on and that I still want to win many more trophies for Paris Saint-Germain. It’s always the same objective: to win and keep on winning."

Upcoming Fixtures Test PSG’s European Credentials

PSG faces immediate tests with back-to-back challenging fixtures. First, they travel to take on Manchester City in the Champions League, followed by a home game against Barcelona on October 20. These matches will be critical in gauging PSG’s ability to maintain their hold on Europe’s top club competition.
