Liverpool’s long pursuit of Bradley Barcola is finally crawling towards the finish line – but not everyone is convinced Anfield is where he should end up.

Desailly: Arsenal would “protect” Barcola better

Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool have an agreement in place. A $163m package, with $136m guaranteed, is on the table for the 21-year-old, and the path to Merseyside looks clear.

Then Marcel Desailly stepped in.

The former Chelsea and France defender has urged Barcola to look away from Liverpool and towards north London, arguing that Arsenal might be the smarter destination for his development in the Premier League. In Desailly’s view, the Gunners would “protect” him better – a pointed word when you consider the intensity and expectation that come with a Liverpool shirt in a Jürgen Klopp-built side.

Liverpool, though, have not backed off. Far from it.

Medicals, timing and a debut on hold

French journalist François Plateau has reported that Barcola is now waiting for the green light to travel to the UK for his medical. That clearance could arrive as early as today, underlining how advanced the negotiations have become after a summer of back-and-forth.

The calendar now matters. Because of registration rules, Barcola would not be available for Liverpool’s clash with Nottingham Forest this weekend, even if the deal is signed off immediately. His first appearance could instead come next weekend against Ipswich Town – a softer landing, on paper, for a high-profile arrival carrying a nine-figure fee and all the scrutiny that comes with it.

For Liverpool, who have spent weeks edging towards this point, that would still count as a major win before the window slams shut.

Window ticking, squad shifting

The clock is loud at Anfield. Only days remain in the transfer window, and Liverpool’s recruitment team is pushing hard to complete their business now rather than be forced into a long wait until January.

Barcola is the headline act, the priority target, the one they have been prepared to chase all summer. But he is not the final piece. Liverpool also want another winger – specifically someone comfortable operating on the right flank.

That search casts a shadow over others. The futures of Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa now sit in an uneasy spotlight, their roles potentially reshaped if another wide forward walks through the door before deadline day. Decisions will have to be made quickly, and ruthlessly.

Sarr caught in the crossfire

The ripple effect of Liverpool’s plans has already reached south London. Ismaila Sarr has been linked with a move to Anfield, and the speculation has not been easy to live with.

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage laid bare the strain around his forward. He admitted the constant talk around Sarr’s future has been “difficult” for the player, even as the club fight to keep hold of one of their key attacking threats.

Sarr is under contract until 2029. He is currently injured. Sage acknowledged that some might try to connect the injury to the uncertainty over his future but insisted the winger remains honest and committed. The manager has spoken to him repeatedly in recent days and made his stance clear: Palace want him back on the pitch, not on a departures board.

For now, that is where it rests – a player caught between a long contract, an injury and the pull of a potential move to one of England’s heavyweights.

A decisive few days

So Liverpool edge towards the end of a window that could reshape their attack for years. Barcola’s move from PSG is close, the medicals are looming, the debut is pencilled in. Another right-sided winger is on the agenda. Other players feel the ground move beneath their feet.

Desailly may believe Arsenal would offer Barcola a softer landing. Liverpool are offering something else: a starring role in one of the most demanding, high-tempo sides in Europe.
