Lionel Messi was named an honorary member of River Plate during his final international match held at the Estadio Monumental. The ceremony celebrated his legendary career with Argentina as he bid farewell on home turf.

Special Tribute Before Kick-Off

Just before the game against Benin, River Plate’s leadership officially welcomed Messi as an honorary club member. The private event took place in the Presidential Office of the stadium and was attended by Stefano Di Carlo. Messi was given an institutional membership card, a commemorative plaque, and a special shirt marking River Plate's 125th anniversary featuring his name and iconic number 10.

Recognition from River Plate and Fans

Di Carlo presented the honor on behalf of all River Plate supporters, acknowledging Messi's impact over more than twenty years representing Argentina. This moment on October 6 highlighted the immense respect the Buenos Aires giants hold for one of football's greatest figures.

The Monumental Stadium: A Stage for Messi’s Legacy

The Estadio Monumental has been central to Messi’s international journey since he scored his first goal there against Uruguay in 2008. The stadium witnessed 19 goals across 28 matches, including standout performances like hat-tricks against Bolivia. His farewell match was a perfect ending at this venue, where he contributed a goal and two assists in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Benin in front of a packed crowd.

Looking Ahead to MLS

With his international career now complete, the 39-year-old striker will return to the United States to rejoin Inter Miami CF. His presence is key as the team aims for strong positioning ahead of the MLS Cup play-offs. Messi faces the challenge of maintaining fitness through a tough schedule before entering the knockout rounds.
