Lionel Messi’s Emotional Farewell to Argentina in a Storybook Finale

Lionel Messi closed his international career with Argentina in a deeply moving and poetic manner. After over two decades wearing the Albiceleste jersey, Messi ended an era filled with triumph and unforgettable moments.

Argentina secured a 3–0 victory over Benin on Tuesday night in Messi’s final game for the national team. He contributed by assisting the first two goals and scoring the last one himself.

The match unfolded as expected, but the overall atmosphere felt like something out of a fairytale.

Final Three Goal Contributions Etched in Memory

Despite Benin being a tougher opponent than anticipated—largely because they chose to mark Messi—the first half saw Messi emotional and quiet. Yet, Argentina gained full control in the second half.

  • First goal: Messi delivered a precise corner kick that Nicolás Otamendi volleyed into the net. Otamendi, who also said goodbye to the national team that night, scored his final goal assisted by Messi.
  • Second goal: Messi assisted a curling shot from Nico Paz, a young attacking midfielder regarded as a potential heir to Messi’s legacy as Argentina’s next great No. 10.
  • Third goal: After Agustín Giay was fouled inside the box, Messi calmly converted the penalty, scoring his 126th and final goal for Argentina.

Messi’s influence was clear, leading in chances created (4), touches inside the box (12), and shots taken (9) during his farewell appearance.

Messi Reflects: ‘Playing for Argentina Is the Most Beautiful Thing’

After the final whistle, the Monumental stadium awaited Messi’s farewell words. A drone show illuminated the sky with highlights from his career, followed by a special musical tribute before Messi took the microphone.

“It’s difficult to say something today. There’s too many emotions, a lot of things crossing my mind. The first thing I think about is my father. There’s nothing for me to do but say ‘Thank you,’ as I said in my retirement letter.
“It was a massive honor to defend this shirt for more than 20 years. Even during the worst moments we went through, I never stopped fighting, giving it my all and being here always. Not coming here anymore will be very painful. I promise you that if it was up to me, I’d be here my entire life. Because playing for Argentina is the most beautiful thing that can happen to anyone.
“Even though I wish I could stay here for the rest of my life, I feel like this is the moment.”

He spoke openly about the toll the 2026 World Cup took on him and dismissed any conspiracy theories around Argentina’s loss to Spain in the final.

“I want to thank my teammates for the time I shared with this group. They made me fulfill a childhood dream: winning the World Cup, the Copa América, the Finalissima, champions of everything we played for.”
“I’m going to miss playing here so much. I had the luck to go all over the country, and I always received so much love. I’m very thankful for what I got to live.”

Tears and Goodbyes: A Nation Mourns Its Hero

Tears flowed freely from Messi throughout the night—from arriving at the stadium, during the anthem, the drone show, and his farewell speech. Coach Lionel Scaloni and several teammates, including Franco Mastantuono, Enzo Fernández, and Cristian Romero, were also visibly emotional.

“Today, here again, I’m sure it’s the saddest day of my career,” Messi said, recalling the joyous celebration at the Monumental after winning the 2022 World Cup. “Because it’s when I say goodbye to the national team and all of you.”
“I’m going to miss defending the colors of the national team, but now I’m going to be on that side, with all of you, supporting these guys in whatever comes. Always together.”

Messi urged the nation to unite behind La Albiceleste, especially through tough times ahead, emphasizing how adversity strengthens the team.

“I don’t want to go, I don’t want to leave the pitch. I just want to tell you that I love you, I will miss you and that I’m thankful to God for being Argentinian.
“I’m proud of being Argentinian and to have fulfilled my dreams with all of you. Thank you very much, I love you.”

Walking hand in hand with his wife and three children, Messi completed a final lap around the stadium as over 85,000 fans chanted: “Messi no se va!” (Messi isn’t leaving!).

Though he left the field for the last time in his Argentina jersey, Messi’s legacy and his last magical moments will remain forever in the hearts of Argentinians and football lovers worldwide.
