Kylian Mbappé's Journey to Real Madrid: A Decade in the Making

For a decade, the phone never went quiet.

On one end, a teenager growing into a global superstar. On the other, the most powerful figure in Spanish football, quietly playing the long game. Kylian Mbappé has finally laid bare just how long Florentino Pérez kept the line open to bring him to the Santiago Bernabéu.

“He’s the one who brought me here. We’ve stayed in touch for ten years before I arrived,” Mbappé told AS, lifting the lid on a courtship that outlasted contracts, coaches and even World Cups. “He always showed affection and understanding in the context of every decision made, both positive and negative for Real Madrid. He always told me that one day I would play for Real Madrid, and here I am, and very happy.”

Those words confirm what many suspected but never fully knew: this was not a transfer sealed in a single summer, but a relationship built patiently over years. Pérez didn’t just wait for Mbappé. He invested in him, emotionally and strategically, even when the answer was “not yet.”

The forward’s appreciation has echoed far beyond the interview room. On social media, one line in particular has ricocheted around Madridistas’ timelines: “I was in contact with Perez since 10 years before joining Real Madrid.” Ten years of messages, reassurances, and reminders that the Bernabéu door would stay open.

And yet, in Mbappé’s telling, Pérez never really had to “sell” anything.

Destiny, not persuasion

For Mbappé, the badge did most of the talking. The move, he suggests, felt less like a negotiation and more like inevitability.

“To be honest, nothing and no one has to convince you to come to Real Madrid,” the World Cup winner insisted. He grew up with Madrid posters on his wall; the club’s mythology had already done the recruitment. “In my history with Madrid, I wanted to come, but it wasn’t possible, and ultimately, in football, there are moments and decisions that are beyond your control. In football, timing is key, and you have to wait for everything to be right before you can go.”

That timing tortured Madrid fans for years. Near misses, late U-turns, and failed attempts turned the saga into a modern epic. Mbappé doesn’t hide that those collapses hurt him as well.

“Of course, there’s disappointment, but a footballer’s life is about looking forward, not back,” he said. While the outside world raged and speculated, he insists his gaze stayed fixed on what might still be, not what had slipped away.

The crucial point, though, is that Real Madrid never needed a hard sell. Not from Pérez, not from anyone.

“No one had to convince me to come to Real Madrid, not even Perez, as big a club as he is. It was obvious,” Mbappé said. Then came the line that will live in Madrid folklore: “If you want to be part of football history, one day you have to play for Real Madrid.”

For a player already crowned world champion at 19, that is a striking admission. Mbappé is not chasing relevance. He is chasing immortality, and in his mind, that road runs straight through the Bernabéu.

A new life, a higher level

Now that the saga is over and the shirt is his, the day-to-day reality has begun. Training sessions at Valdebebas. Life in the Spanish capital. The weight and warmth of a fanbase that spans continents.

“I expected the best club in the world, to receive a lot of excitement from Madridistas all over the world,” he said. The reception did not disappoint. Nor did the shift in perception that came the moment he signed.

“When I arrived here I already had a status, but when you are a Real Madrid player you move to another level, to a higher level. I think that if you want to belong to the history of football, you have to go through Real Madrid.”

That higher level comes with scrutiny, but also with a strange kind of calm. Mbappé speaks of a “new sense of peace” since leaving France, even as his profile has somehow grown again. At Madrid, the noise around him is constant, but so is the structure around the team. The institution absorbs part of the glare.

He has settled into Valdebebas, into the rhythms of a club that measures success in European Cups and eras, not seasons. The transfer saga is over. The decade-long dialogue with Pérez has reached its intended destination.

Now the question shifts from “when will he join?” to something far more demanding.
