Jurgen Klopp Stands Firm on 44-Man Germany Squad After Shock Defeat to Greece
Jurgen Klopp faced heavy criticism after Germany's surprising defeat to Greece in his home debut as national team coach. Despite the backlash, Klopp stood by his bold decision to name two squads totaling 44 players, insisting this approach is necessary for the team’s future.
"Tomorrow morning the boys arriving now will train. They aren’t in sync either, I know that. Still, from my perspective, there was no alternative but to do it this way (double squad). I stand by it 100 percent. People can have their opinions, but we approached it like this and it felt right. Everything this week was top, except for a large part of this game," Klopp told ARD.
Aiming for Long-Term Growth Over Immediate Wins
Klopp’s strategy focuses on reshaping the national team by integrating many new players at once. He believes this experimentation accelerates the team’s evolution, even if the results don’t reflect progress yet.
"The plan is to gather as much information as possible in these two and a half weeks. If we had simply brought the same team that played in the World Cup, I doubt today’s game would have looked much different. That would have been bad news," Klopp said.
He added that the newcomers performed fairly well, and it’s unfair to blame individuals. Playing alongside younger teammates is challenging even for experienced players, but Klopp noticed promising signs despite lacking a dominant style.
Klopp Takes Responsibility for Tactical Issues
While defending his selection choices, Klopp accepted full responsibility for the tactical failures against a disciplined Greek side. Germany struggled to break down Greece’s low defensive block and lacked clinical finishing.
"A lot is on me. The line-up, substitutions—all 100 percent my decisions. We couldn’t fully overcome a deep-lying Greek defense without some luck or an outstanding goalkeeper. I could accept not winning by a big margin or even not winning today, but losing? That’s tough," Klopp admitted.
Pressure Mounts as Germany Trails in Group A2
This loss places Germany third in Group A2 with just one point from two matches. Greece leads the group with six points, making them the surprise standout so far. Klopp faces pressure to quickly rally his team as the international schedule leaves little room for adjustment.
Next Matches:
- October 1: Germany vs Serbia (home, must-win)
- October 4: Greece vs Germany (away, chance for redemption)
These upcoming games are crucial for Klopp to prove that his overhaul plan can still succeed despite the early setback.
