Francesco Totti Claims Italy’s 2006 World Cup Victory Hinged on His Role

Francesco Totti, the legendary Roma midfielder, recently joked that Italy’s triumph at the 2006 World Cup would not have happened without him. He highlighted his tournament-leading four assists and crucial presence on the field as key factors in the victory.

Reflecting on the 2006 World Cup Triumph

Known for his steadfast loyalty to Roma, Totti feels that winning the 2006 World Cup truly elevated his reputation from a local hero to an international football legend. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport on his 50th birthday, he said the trophy changed how the world viewed him beyond Rome.

A Confident Statement About the Final

Totti is convinced that his spot in Marcello Lippi’s squad was vital for Italy’s success. He humorously remarked, "If I hadn’t played, they wouldn’t have won it." He added that winning the World Cup gave him recognition beyond the boundaries of Rome. Totti reflected, "Had I only won one Scudetto, two Coppa Italias, and two Supercoppas, I would have remained ‘inside the ring road.’ But winning the World Cup, even at 40 percent fitness, made a significant impact. Not everyone gets to win a World Cup."

Playing Through Injury

The statement about playing at 40 percent reflects reality. In February 2006, Totti suffered a fractured left ankle that needed urgent surgery. Despite this, he rushed to regain fitness for the summer tournament. Even with limited match readiness, he started six out of seven games for Italy, scored once, and recorded four assists—the highest in the competition. He described his peak years by saying, "Between 2001 and 2008, I felt incredibly strong. It was almost embarrassing how good I felt."

Leadership Without Loud Words

Though Totti dazzled on the pitch, he often faced criticism for not being a vocal leader in the locker room. When questioned, he didn’t deny this but explained his approach: "I’ve always believed that what counts is what happens on the pitch. Off it, everyone can talk. People asked me why I didn’t say something before the game, but I had to focus on playing and enjoying myself. I never felt nervous before matches."
