Enzo Maresca Reveals PSG Coach Luis Enrique Called Their Champions League Win Over Man City 'Lucky'

Manchester City faced a tough night at the Etihad as they hosted Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning Champions League champions, during the 2026/27 group stage. After opening their campaign with a 2-0 win away at Porto, City hoped to secure back-to-back wins in Europe but were overwhelmed by PSG’s dominance.

PSG surged ahead quickly, leading 3-0 at halftime and finishing the match 4-2. Despite a spirited second-half effort from City that yielded two goals, it wasn't enough to challenge the visitors' control of the game.

How PSG Took Control

The French side showcased their attacking strength by scoring four goals past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele each recorded a goal and an assist, while Manuel Akliouche and Vitinha also found the net for PSG.

City’s response came through Erling Haaland, who scored twice. Even though City fired off 27 shots, only nine were on target. They managed to get more touches inside PSG’s penalty box (52 to 17), but lacked efficiency in converting chances.

Maresca Shares Luis Enrique’s Remark

After the defeat, Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca revealed a surprising comment from PSG coach Luis Enrique. According to Maresca, Enrique told him that PSG had been somewhat “lucky” to score as many goals as they did.

“We struggled in the first half because we conceded two goals, and when you are inside the pitch, you know that it's already difficult against them, and then you are thinking ‘oh my god we are 2-0 down now,’ so it becomes even more difficult,” Maresca said. “But the second half I think we created enough chances, and we deserve something more, to be honest. But Luis [Enrique] also at the end told me that they had been quite lucky during the 95 minutes, but again we lost and we can learn from that and move on.”

PSG’s four goals came from just 1.83 expected goals, indicating some fortune, yet their clinical finishing and midfield control, especially from Vitinha, justified the scoreline.
