Roberto De Zerbi Draws from Pochettino’s Tottenham Team Bonding Idea
Roberto De Zerbi has taken a page from a move once made by Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, choosing to take his squad away to Spain for team bonding during a difficult Premier League campaign.
Tottenham's struggles this season have been frustrating, with the team still searching for their first league win. Despite spending heavily in the summer transfer window, the results haven’t matched expectations. Their recent draw against Manchester United offered some hope, especially since they played much of the match with ten men after Rodrigo Bentancur's red card.
In an effort to build cohesion, De Zerbi decided to take the unusual step of organizing a mid-season trip abroad. According to Football London, the purpose is to strengthen the squad’s unity and help players get to know each other better.
“To work together, to stay together, to go for dinner together, to know better each other, because to be a team you have to know the team-mates, and be together,” said De Zerbi.
This approach is rarely seen during the regular season; such trips usually happen during preseason or international breaks. The decision echoes what Pochettino did seven years ago when he took the squad away ahead of the Champions League final.
With over ten new signings in the squad, it’s understandable that the team needs time to gel. Not every new player will fail, but adjustment periods are inevitable. This trip might be exactly what Spurs need to start clicking on the pitch.
Fans will be watching closely to see how Tottenham respond as they face Coventry at home on Monday night in the Premier League.
