Danny Mills Calls Stripping Man City of Titles ‘Pointless’ Amid FFP Charges

Danny Mills shared his views with GOAL on why removing Manchester City's titles and medals over their Financial Fair Play (FFP) case would serve no real purpose. The former defender argues that punishing the club by taking away trophies from an era already celebrated feels irrelevant, especially as appeals continue against the 115 charges brought.

The Allegations and Possible Sanctions

Manchester City face accusations of manipulating finances between 2010 and 2018, with an independent commission upholding all but one charge. A final decision is expected by January 2027. Speculation around possible penalties ranges from relegation or points deductions to hefty fines and transfer bans. Some voices even call for erasing every trophy won during their domestic dominance.

  • Trophies since 2010:
  • Eight Premier League titles
  • One Champions League title
  • Four FA Cups (including 2011)
  • Seven League Cups
  • UEFA Super Cup
  • FIFA Club World Cup

Much of this success came under coach Pep Guardiola, including the historic 2022-23 treble.

Why Stripping Titles Would Be Ineffective

Mills explained the challenge of applying punishments retrospectively. He highlighted the difficulty in drawing a line between benefits gained before and after 2018, noting how the club’s established foundation allowed continued success even beyond that period.

“You can take titles away, irrelevant. You can take medals and trophies away from players, irrelevant. They’ve had those moments, they’ve had those days out, they’ve had those bonuses,” Mills said. “If you want to come and take my Carling Cup medal away, come and take it. I still won the Carling Cup. It doesn’t make any difference.”

He compared the situation to revisiting historical sports events decades later, such as questioning England’s 1966 World Cup win based on technology not available at the time, calling retrospective punishments "incredibly difficult." Instead, he suggested sanctions should focus on future conduct.

Ongoing Legal Battle and Current Focus

The club disputes the charges and continues to seek clearance amid prolonged legal procedures. While that unfolds, Enzo Maresca and the team concentrate on upcoming matches and maintaining their stronghold in domestic and international competitions. Their next game is an away trip to Liverpool on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
