Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Suspension from Portugal After Leaving National Team

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo following his departure from the national team last week amid a conflict with manager Jorge Jesus. The federation announced on October 9, 2026, that disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo have begun under urgent status.

At 41 years old, Ronaldo remains suspended while awaiting the final verdict regarding his punishment. Portugal's next international matches are scheduled for November 14 and 17 in the UEFA Nations League, facing Denmark and Wales respectively.

Dispute Over Playing Time Sparks Controversy

The disciplinary action stems from Ronaldo's accusations that Jorge Jesus broke promises about his playing time during Portugal's Nations League game against Norway. Ronaldo said they had agreed he would rest for matches against Norway and Denmark to preserve his fitness, with Jesus assuring him he would play 30 minutes in the Norway game.

During that match, Ronaldo warmed up in the second half but was not substituted in. Jesus later explained that Portugal's 2-1 lead prompted him to keep Ronaldo on the bench. This decision upset Ronaldo, who then met with Jesus and claimed their agreement was misrepresented in the manager's subsequent press conference.

Ronaldo’s Response and Apology

After leaving the national team camp, Ronaldo apologized to his teammates and accepted that he will face any discipline imposed by the FPF. He also emphasized that he is not retiring from international football and expressed hope for one or more farewell matches.

The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them, Ronaldo said on social media. I believe the penalty should not be reduced. I am not just an ordinary player; I am the captain of the team, and that is an aggravating factor. I have already apologized, but I know that actions have consequences. Anyone in the world of football, like me, knows that the rules are the same for everyone, regardless of individual standing.

Back in Action at Club Level

Despite the national team controversy, Ronaldo showed no signs of slowing down at club level. On Friday, he scored the 980th goal of his career during Al-Nassr's 3-0 victory over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League.
