Cristiano Ronaldo Blasts Coach Jorge Jesus Over Broken Promises in Portugal Exit
Cristiano Ronaldo has released a detailed statement explaining his sudden departure from the Portugal national team camp. He accuses head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking promises about his playing time and failing to deliver on a public apology, which led Ronaldo to leave the squad to protect his integrity.
Dispute Over Playing Time After World Cup
Ronaldo laid out the timeline following the 2026 World Cup. He mentioned drafting a farewell letter to Portuguese fans but was persuaded by the Football Federation President to reconsider leaving. The president promised that the federation wanted him to stay.
Ronaldo agreed to remain after hearing a plan from Jesus: he would play in the first and last matches of the campaign, with three to four substitutions per game for fitness management. However, Jesus later asked him to play in a match in Norway, which was outside Ronaldo’s planned recovery schedule. Despite reservations, Ronaldo agreed and was told he would play 30 minutes.
Instead, he warmed up during halftime but was never called onto the pitch. Ronaldo said, "The coach broke his word to me. I just wanted the match to end with a victory and to be left alone."
Failed Promise of a Public Apology
A private meeting was held after the game involving Ronaldo, Jorge Jesus, and Al Nassr's sporting director Simão Coutinho. They agreed Jesus would address the incident openly during the next press conference, admitting the mistake and apologizing publicly.
Jesus was supposed to clarify that Ronaldo never requested playing time, that the coach had initiated the plan, and that warming up without playing was an error not to be repeated. Instead, Jesus gave a different message filled with unexpected aggression towards Ronaldo, with no apology issued. This was the second broken promise in Ronaldo’s eyes.
Departure from Camp and Taking Accountability
Feeling betrayed, Ronaldo chose to leave the training camp immediately. He stressed his desire for honesty, saying, "For me, the truth is still the most important thing in relationships between people." He also claimed he had asked the Federation President and the coach to be straightforward if they didn’t want him in the squad.
Despite the situation, Ronaldo took responsibility for walking out. He apologized to his teammates and the Portuguese public, explaining that breaking trust deeply affected him and staying on would only harm the team. "I packed my bags and left," he said. He acknowledged that any consequences should come from the Portuguese Football Federation without excuses.
Looking Ahead
Ronaldo now awaits any disciplinary measures but insists he remains committed to representing Portugal. He declared, "If I’m fit, playing and scoring at my club after serving any suspension, I’ll be ready to compete and win for our national team."
