Why Manchester-Born Referee Chris Kavanagh Can Officiate Man City Matches
Referee Chris Kavanagh, born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, recently officiated the Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester City. This sparked questions from Liverpool fans about why he was allowed to oversee a game involving his hometown club.
Controversy Over Gravenberch’s Sending-Off
Liverpool’s manager Andoni Iraola criticized Kavanagh's decision to show two yellow cards to Ryan Gravenberch, resulting in the midfielder’s dismissal at the 62nd minute. Following the red card, Man City scored three goals within 13 minutes, securing a 3-0 victory.
I think the first foul of Ryan is never a yellow card, never,” Iraola said. “These kinds of games, just a stomp on the big toe, or something minor. He doesn't even call the foul straight away. He lets a bit go. I don't know why after he shows the yellow card, because it's not a situation where it leaves an advantage.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher shared his view on Sky Sports, stating the first yellow card was too harsh and issued too quickly by Kavanagh.
Understanding Referee Club Allegiances and Restrictions
Premier League referees often face restrictions when officiating clubs they have personal ties to. For instance:
- Michael Oliver cannot referee Newcastle United or Sunderland due to his support for Newcastle.
- Australian referee Jarred Gillet is barred from overseeing Everton or Liverpool matches because of his Liverpool fandom.
However, Kavanagh is exempt from these restrictions because he supports Droylsden FC, a non-league team based in Greater Manchester competing in the North West Counties League Premier Division. This neutral stance classifies him as having no conflict of interest with any Premier League side.
The same principle applied to former referee Anthony Taylor, also from Manchester, who supported non-league Altrincham, enabling him to officiate Manchester United and City games without restrictions.
Current Premier League Standings and Upcoming Fixtures
After the loss to Manchester City, Liverpool sits ninth in the Premier League table following six matches, having won only two under Iraola so far. Their next challenge is an away match against Brentford on Saturday.
