Chelsea’s Midfield Dilemma: Kone Talks Progress as Enzo Nears Man City Exit

Chelsea’s summer suddenly has a clear pressure point: fix the midfield, or lose Enzo Fernandez without a safety net.

The club have moved aggressively. Personal terms are now agreed with Manu Kone, the AS Roma midfielder, according to multiple reports, as Chelsea race the clock to secure a replacement that would finally allow Enzo’s long-rumoured move to Manchester City to accelerate.

Enzo, City and a record-breaking fee

The numbers around Enzo are huge. Manchester City are prepared to pay £120m for the Argentina international, a fee that would make him both the most expensive signing in City’s history and the costliest midfielder the game has seen.

Fernandez wants the move. Chelsea are not blocking it on sentiment. Their stance is brutally simple: two conditions, or no deal. They want the full £120m, and they want a “worthy” replacement through the door first.

That second condition is driving everything.

Chelsea turn to Roma

Chelsea’s recruitment team have zeroed in on two names in recent days: Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Roma’s Manu Kone. The focus has quickly sharpened on the latter.

FootballTransfers report that Chelsea have already agreed personal terms with Kone and are now actively pushing to close a deal with Roma before the window shuts. The player is on board. The hard part is prising him out of Italy.

French journalist Santi Aouna revealed that Chelsea have made official contact with Roma for the 25-year-old, with talks ongoing between the clubs over a possible transfer. The dialogue is open, the negotiation live.

A bid on the table – and resistance in Rome

Italian reporter Nico Schira went further, stating that Chelsea have lodged an offer worth €65m (around £56m) for Kone. His information paints a tense picture in the Italian capital: Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini considers Kone “non-transferable”, leaving the final call with the midfielder himself and owner Dan Friedkin.

Roma, then, are digging their heels in. But every big bid tests a stance, and Chelsea’s interest is not casual. If Roma do yield, even reluctantly, it would remove the biggest obstacle to Enzo’s departure.

The chain reaction is obvious: Kone in, Fernandez out, City get their man.

Advanced – but not at any price

Gianluca Di Marzio has since described the Kone move as an “advanced” deal between Chelsea and Roma, though he suggests the numbers may not reach the €65m mark mentioned elsewhere. Di Marzio cites a fee in the region of £52m, underlining that there is still room for manoeuvre and detail to be thrashed out.

His update also notes Jamie Bynoe-Gittens moving close to Roma on loan, hinting at a broader web of negotiations around the Giallorossi’s summer plans. For Chelsea, though, the headline is clear: Kone is no longer just a name on a shortlist. He is a live, late-window target.

A sliding door for Chelsea’s season

Strip it back, and Chelsea’s entire midfield shape for the coming season hangs on this sequence of decisions. If Roma hold firm and Kone stays put, Chelsea’s leverage over Enzo’s future weakens. If Friedkin and the player decide to cash in and move, the path clears for Manchester City to land a £120m centrepiece.
