Michael Carrick or Eddie Howe: Who Should Lead Manchester United?
With ongoing speculation about the managerial position at Manchester United, many wonder who is best suited to guide the club forward. Eddie Howe has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Michael Carrick, whose future remains uncertain amid recent poor results. Paul Parker, a Premier League winner and former United player, shared his opinion with GOAL on the matter.
Carrick's Impact as Interim Manager
When Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager in January, optimism briefly returned to Old Trafford. He took over from caretaker Darren Fletcher following Ruben Amorim's dismissal. Carrick, who enjoyed success at United as a player, started well with wins against Manchester City and Arsenal, the latter then champions-elect.
Despite finishing third last season, United did not make significant signings during the summer transfer window. This left the squad somewhat thin in key areas. This season has been difficult, with just two wins from nine matches across all competitions, including a five-match winless streak.
Board Considering Change Amid Poor Form
The pressure on Carrick is mounting. The club's leadership is said to be preparing for a potential managerial change. Former Bournemouth and Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who left Newcastle in July after nearly five years, is seen as a possible candidate, though his availability might be limited.
Paul Parker’s View: Stick with Carrick
“I still think you stay with Carrick,” Parker told GOAL. “I’m a novice in the whole thing, but if you’re looking at Eddie Howe, after what he had to go through with the people he was working for, does he really want to walk into something very similar?”
Parker doubts Howe would have the freedom to spend on players or bring in his preferred staff. The current environment at United, shaped by off-field issues, makes it hard for an ambitious manager to succeed. Parker pointed out that winning the league at United is the ultimate achievement, but right now, the conditions don’t support that ambition.
He also highlighted problems with the club’s transfer policy, where moving players on is difficult, leading to a bloated squad with some players content to remain. According to Parker, Howe will want to work somewhere with clear ambition and supportive leadership, something United currently lack.
“When you go to Manchester United, everyone expects you to compete for the league. But at the moment, you need everyone wanting to win a league and giving you the best chance. You’re not going to get that at Manchester United at this moment.”
United’s Struggles Continue
Manchester United have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Their challenges extend both on and off the field, with several issues needing resolution before they can seriously challenge for trophies again.
This season has been rough so far. United were eliminated from the Carabao Cup early and are sitting 13th in the league with six points from six games. Their recent 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League saw tensions rise, including a red card for Leny Yoro and a post-match outburst from Lisandro Martinez. Carrick’s job remains under scrutiny as they prepare to face Leeds United next.
