Cal Poly Mustangs Fall to Arizona State in Road Test

TEMPE, Ariz. — Cal Poly’s first road test of the season lasted only 87 minutes on the clock, but the lesson stretched a lot longer than that.

Arizona State, unbeaten and brimming with confidence, struck early and never really loosened its grip, handing the Mustangs a 2-0 defeat on Sunday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

Stung Early, Chasing All Night

Cal Poly arrived with a clear blueprint. Head coach Bernardo Silva liked the plan. The execution, though, cracked almost immediately.

Less than four minutes in, the Sun Devils sliced through and found the opener, punishing a slow start and tilting the night their way before the visitors could settle. For a Cal Poly side still learning itself on the road, it was a gut punch.

Silva didn’t hide from it afterward. The early concession hurt, but what followed bothered him more: Arizona State simply believed harder, wanted it more, and showed it over 80-plus minutes.

Once the initial shock faded, the Mustangs began to look more like themselves. They pressed high, harassed the ASU back line and forced turnovers in dangerous pockets. Their energy produced moments that hinted at an equalizer, especially through the work of sophomore forward Maddy Cole.

Cole, making her first start since transferring from Cal State Bakersfield, buzzed around the attacking third, carving out one of Cal Poly’s better looks of the first half. The finish never came. The intent was there; the cutting edge was not.

Herzing’s Flash, ASU’s Control

The best Mustang chance arrived just after the break.

Six minutes into the second half, sophomore Kenzie Herzing exploded down the right wing, burning past her marker and driving into the box. With the angle narrowing, she unleashed a fierce shot that screamed just over the bar. For a moment, the home crowd held its breath. So did Cal Poly’s bench.

Misses like that change matches. This one didn’t.

As the half wore on, Arizona State tightened its control. The Sun Devils began to dictate tempo, string passes together and pin Cal Poly deeper. The Mustangs still chased, still pressed, but the gaps grew and the legs tired.

The pressure finally told in the 82nd minute. ASU doubled its lead, a second goal that reflected the flow of the night as much as the scoreboard: 2-0 and a mountain too steep with too little time.

Weather Ends It Early, Road Trip Rolls On

The desert had the last word. Inclement weather in the area forced the match to be called in the 87th minute, denying any late push from Cal Poly and freezing the final numbers where they stood.

Junior goalkeeper Shannon Porubski kept the scoreline respectable with four saves, facing a steady stream of chances as Arizona State outshot the Mustangs 14-5. The stat sheet told the story plainly: the hosts sharper in both boxes, the visitors stuck on the edge of the contest without quite breaking in.

For Cal Poly, now 2-2-1, this was just the first stop on a demanding four-match road swing. The next one comes quickly: a trip to Berkeley to face Cal at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

A long week, a long stretch away from home, and one clear question for the Mustangs: who will want it more next time?
