Joe Bursik Returns to AFC Wimbledon—A Homecoming

A familiar face is back between the posts at Plough Lane. AFC Wimbledon have brought in goalkeeper Joe Bursik on loan from Championship side Portsmouth for the rest of the season, completing a move that feels as much like a reunion as a transfer.

This is not just another stop on the goalkeeper carousel. Bursik first walked through Wimbledon's doors as an eight-year-old, learning his trade in the club’s academy before leaving for Stoke City at 16. Now 26, he returns as a seasoned professional, not a prospect.

His reputation was forged during a strong spell at Stoke. Across the 2020-2021 Championship campaign, Bursik kept seven clean sheets in 16 league appearances, a record that underlined his shot-stopping pedigree and composure at a higher level. That form opened the door to a series of loans – Telford, Accrington, Doncaster and Peterborough – each stint adding another layer of experience in varied, often unforgiving environments.

Portsmouth moved for him in September 2025, and he went on to make 10 league appearances for Pompey. He also started one of the club’s standout fixtures of recent seasons, lining up against Arsenal in a 4-1 FA Cup third-round defeat at Fratton Park. The result went against him, but the stage and the scrutiny were a measure of how far he had come from those early days in Wimbledon's youth ranks.
