Bayern Munich's Interest in Florian Wirtz: Current Status

Bayern Munich have stepped away from the idea of rescuing Florian Wirtz from his difficult start at Liverpool – for now. But the story around the German playmaker is nowhere near finished.

The Bundesliga champions have been repeatedly linked with a renewed push for Wirtz after his stuttering adaptation to the Premier League, yet well-connected German reporter Christian Falk has poured cold water on talk of an imminent move.

Bayern close the door – but not for good

“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” Falk said on CF Bayern Insider, cutting through weeks of speculation.

Inside Bayern, there is awareness of the noise around Wirtz. There is also history. Before the 21-year-old chose Liverpool in a £116m switch from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025, Bayern held two secret meetings with him – one in Munich, one in Liverpool. Manchester City were circling as well, but Arne Slot convinced the German international that Anfield was the right stage.

That decision came with huge expectation. Wirtz arrived as one of Europe’s most gifted young attackers, the creative heartbeat of Leverkusen’s rise. At Liverpool, the script has not unfolded so smoothly.

He has struggled with the intensity and physical demands of English football. Performances have been patchy, his influence inconsistent. Those issues have fuelled the idea that Bayern might swoop in if Liverpool’s patience wears thin.

Falk, though, pushed back on the idea that Bayern are currently manoeuvring behind the scenes.

He also challenged the narrative that Wirtz is failing. In his view, the midfielder is adapting, playing in a new role, and actually performing better than last season, even if doubts linger in England. At the same time, Bayern have their own delicate situation with Jamal Musiala, who has not yet returned to his top level after illness and previous injury problems.

A swap that lives in the background

Publicly, Falk is clear: there is “nothing planned” between Bayern and Wirtz. No active pursuit. No concrete talks.

Yet the rumours refuse to die because the moving parts fit a certain logic. Wirtz has Bundesliga roots. Bayern remain the natural destination for elite German talent. Liverpool paid a huge fee, and any exit would require serious money or a creative solution.

That is where Michael Olise enters the conversation.

The French international, signed from Crystal Palace, has quickly become central to Vincent Kompany’s plans in Munich. The Belgian coach is building a new system with Olise as the fulcrum in the middle of the pitch – the same role he occupies for the French national team. Around him, Bayern boast depth and options, with Musiala tied down on a long contract and a squad full of attacking talent.

Even so, Olise’s contractual situation keeps the door slightly ajar. Falk notes there is hope inside Bayern that the former Palace winger signs a new deal. If he does not, and he pushes for a transfer, the dominoes could start to wobble.

In that scenario, Wirtz becomes more than a name on a rumour mill.

Falk describes the German as “very interesting” for Bayern, precisely because of his versatility. Wirtz can operate wide or centrally, offering tactical flexibility and long-term upside. If Olise were sold for a major fee – Real Madrid are mentioned as a possible destination – or included in a swap with Liverpool, Bayern would suddenly have both the need and the funds to move.

That is why Falk stops short of dismissing the idea outright. He stresses that many conditions would have to align, many positions discussed, but he does not pretend Bayern have never considered it.

For now, the situation rests in a kind of transfer limbo. Bayern are content with a big, confident squad. Liverpool remain heavily invested in Wirtz, both financially and emotionally, still hoping he grows into the player they thought they were signing.

If Wirtz ever decides he wants to go home, though, everyone already knows who he will call first.
