Aston Villa Sign PSG Winger Ibrahim Mbaye

Aston Villa have muscled their way into one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer chases, striking a deal with PSG for highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye and leaving Liverpool empty-handed in their search for a Mohamed Salah heir.

The 18-year-old is finally on his way to the Premier League. Just not to Merseyside.

Liverpool had explored a move for the right-winger as they assessed long-term options to succeed Salah, but ran headlong into PSG’s price demands. The French champions quoted the Reds a fee of €70 million, a figure that could potentially have been negotiated down, but not without a long, draining saga. Liverpool chose not to burn time and energy haggling.

They pivoted instead. All focus went onto securing top target Bradley Barcola, and that change of direction opened the door. Villa stepped through it with purpose.

Villa’s long game pays off

This is not a panic buy from the Midlands. Villa have tracked Mbaye for some time and pushed to sign him as early as January. PSG shut that down, unwilling to lose a prized academy product mid-season.

The landscape changed after the winter.

Mbaye returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal to find his minutes shrinking in the second half of the campaign. For a teenager already accustomed to elite-level football, the bench quickly became too small a stage. He wanted regular game time. PSG, faced with a restless talent and a strong market, had little choice but to consider a sale.

Villa were ready.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the club have now agreed a €55 million deal with PSG, helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. That connection smoothed the path where others stalled.

Mbaye is expected to sign a long-term contract, and the report makes clear this is no opportunistic swoop: the Senegal international has been a long-standing target for the Birmingham club.

A teenager with big-stage scars already

At 18, Mbaye arrives with a résumé that dwarfs his age. He has already made 42 senior appearances for PSG, gaining experience in one of Europe’s most pressurised environments. On top of that, he has represented Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter and at the World Cup this summer.

Those tournaments harden a player. They also raise expectations.

Yet despite that rapid rise, Mbaye found himself squeezed out of the picture in Paris after AFCON. Game time dried up. For a winger who thrives on rhythm and confidence, it was a warning sign. A move became more than a possibility; it became a necessity.

Emery has been clear in his planning: he wanted another wide option, someone who can stretch games, carry the ball at pace, and threaten from the right. Mbaye fits that profile and more. His arrival is expected to place him at the heart of Villa’s attacking plans rather than on the fringes.

Villa had also been in talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, aiming to add another marquee attacking name. But the signals from the player’s camp were not encouraging. Leao is understood to favour a move to Galatasaray and was unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal.

The setback could have left Villa scrambling. Instead, the agreement for Mbaye has landed at exactly the right moment.

One winger has turned them down. Another, younger, hungrier, and already tested on the biggest stages, is about to walk through the door.

For Villa, the question now is simple: can this 18-year-old from Paris become the next great wide menace in the Premier League, and tilt their ambitions up another level?
