Arsenal Revive Alvarez Pursuit with Barcelona Clause Strategy

On the final stretch of the window, Arsenal’s longest-running saga of the summer has flickered back into life.

Julian Alvarez, the Atletico Madrid forward who has spent months resisting a move to north London, is now said to be softening his stance on a switch to the Premier League – handing Mikel Arteta a sliver of Deadline Day hope.

Arteta has pushed hard for Alvarez. Internally, the Argentine has been framed as close to a dream signing: technically sharp, tactically flexible, and at the right age to anchor Arsenal’s attack for years. But for most of the summer, there has been one immovable obstacle.

He only wanted Barcelona.

Alvarez has described Barça as his “dream” move, and that preference has shaped every conversation around his future. Arsenal’s early pursuit cooled after a failed attempt to land Vinicius Jr, and by mid-August the London option looked dead. The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported that Alvarez had made it clear to Arteta he was not interested in joining the Gunners.

Then the story twisted again.

Talks resumed last week, and fresh reports now suggest Arsenal have been working quietly in the background to reopen the door. According to TEAMtalk, the club are trying to make a move to London as smooth as possible for the 26-year-old, attacking the problem from a different angle: his life off the pitch.

Alvarez is desperate to leave Atletico. That much has not changed. What has shifted is his openness to where he goes next. He is now said to be willing to consider London, but with a significant condition – he wants to relocate with members of his extended family, who have been living with him in Madrid.

That demand complicates everything. It means visas, schooling, housing, and a level of support that goes beyond the usual signing-on package. Arsenal, though, are reportedly prepared to lean into those logistical challenges, signalling that they understand the scale of the move and are ready to help facilitate it.

The more intriguing part of their pitch sits inside the proposed contract.

Arsenal are thought to be ready to include a so-called “Barcelona clause” in any agreement for Alvarez – a mechanism that could allow him to move to the Catalan club in the future if the right conditions are met. For the player, it offers a bridge: the chance to leave Atletico now, compete at the sharp end in England, yet still keep a realistic route open to his preferred destination.

For Arsenal, it is a calculated risk. They would be signing a forward whose ultimate dream lies elsewhere, but in return they gain a high-level attacker in his prime, motivated to perform on one of Europe’s biggest stages while keeping his long-term ambition alive.

This is the reality of the modern market: creative clauses, personal guarantees, and clubs bending to the pull of the game’s traditional giants. Arsenal know that if they want Alvarez, they may have to accept that Barcelona will always be in the background.

The question now is whether that compromise is enough to turn a long-standing admirer into their new No 9 before the window slams shut.
