Andoni Iraola Should Take a Risk on Liverpool’s Overlooked Star
Liverpool are expected to improve significantly this season after finishing fifth in the Premier League last year. That disappointing finish led to Arne Slot losing his job. Considering the Reds were champions just a season prior, their drop was surprising. Although Slot believed he would keep his position, it seemed best for both sides that he moved on.
Andoni Iraola took over as manager and, despite Liverpool remaining unbeaten so far across all competitions, there is a sense that more should come from the squad. Iraola has favored certain players but now might be the moment to try something different by giving a chance to one of Liverpool’s forgotten talents.
Current Injuries and Striker Dilemma
The fans won’t see Liverpool play again until October 11th due to an extended international break focused on the UEFA Nations League. While it’s important for the first team to stay fit, injuries can happen during these periods.
So far, Liverpool has been relatively fortunate, but recently two key forwards—Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak—have suffered injuries. With Hugo Ekitike still sidelined, Iraola’s options upfront are limited.
Though Jayden Danns and Lewis Koumas could fill in as strikers, this situation opens the door for Federico Chiesa to step up. Chiesa's 2025-26 season was hampered by injuries, and while he usually plays on the wing, this might be his chance to prove himself as a striker.
Chiesa’s Potential Role at Liverpool
Chiesa has shown goal-scoring ability, even if his pace has declined slightly. Positioned alongside players like Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz, he could adapt well and provide a useful solution in attack.
Playing without Gakpo and Isak in the starting lineup feels risky because they’ve been among Liverpool’s most effective attackers. Gakpo, in particular, has been outstanding with six goal contributions, often turning games in Liverpool’s favor.
For Liverpool to challenge seriously for the title, they need quality depth in every role. Currently, some positions have clear first and second choices, but a strong team can adjust and still secure wins when key players are missing.
Chiesa’s time at Liverpool hasn’t been smooth, yet if Iraola takes a chance and gives him playing time, Chiesa might finally prove his worth and revive his career.
