Anderson Weighs in on Bruno Fernandes vs. Paul Scholes Debate: 'Different Level' for Man Utd Legend

Bruno Fernandes has become a key figure for Manchester United in midfield, but how does he measure up to club legend Paul Scholes? Anderson, who shared the pitch with Scholes, gives his take to GOAL.

Paul Scholes' Legacy at Manchester United

Scholes made his senior debut in 1993 after coming through United’s youth system alongside stars like David Beckham and Gary Neville. Throughout his entire career at Old Trafford, he appeared 718 times under Sir Alex Ferguson, helping the club dominate English football and win multiple Champions League titles, including the unforgettable 1998-99 Treble season.

He scored 155 goals for United, known for his knack of timing late runs into the box and surprising opponents. His exceptional passing and quick feet set up countless chances for teammates.

Fernandes’ Impact in Modern Times

Fernandes has hit many similar notes during his time at United. Last season, he set a Premier League record with 21 assists in one campaign. Across all competitions, he has only once failed to reach double-digit goals since joining, scoring 111 goals in 334 matches so far.

The Portuguese midfielder has earned five Player of the Year awards at the club and was named PFA Player of the Year for 2025-26. Now wearing the captain’s armband, he is seen as an inspirational leader and is expected to extend his contract given his importance.

Is Fernandes on Scholes’ Level?

"I think Bruno Fernandes is amazing, has amazing qualities, amazing player. He’s a top player in this time, but I think Scholes is a different level. He’s a completely different level," Anderson told GOAL.

Anderson placed Scholes among the elite midfielders globally, alongside Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Fernandes, by comparison, was grouped closer to players like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, and Claude Makelele.

He explained that their playing styles differ. Scholes operated deeper, balancing defensive duties with attack, while Fernandes plays more offensively, similar to Wayne Rooney’s role. "They’re both completely different, but Scholes is Scholes. Scholes is a different planet," Anderson added.

Reflecting on their time together, Anderson said, "Sometimes it makes me p*ssed off when I do all the running, and then Scholes gets the ball for 10 minutes and scores. That’s Scholes—an amazing player and person."

Since Scholes' Retirement, United's Title Drought

Scholes retired for good in 2013, shortly after Ferguson stepped down. Since then, United have endured a 13-year wait for another Premier League title.

Fernandes is one of the leaders tasked with bringing the club back to the top. Despite often carrying the team on his shoulders, it remains uncertain if he will join the ranks of United’s most decorated champions.
