Ajax Signs Yves Bissouma for Three Years to Rebuild Career
Ajax have ended Yves Bissouma’s limbo and handed the Mali international a three-year stage on which to rebuild his reputation, confirming the midfielder’s arrival on a deal running until June 30, 2027.
The contract, effective immediately, gives the 27-year-old a clear horizon after his Tottenham spell faded away in a blur of missed chances and off-field trouble. His time in north London closed quietly at the end of last season when his deal expired; his next chapter begins under the bright lights of the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
From Spurs doubts to Dutch reset
Bissouma’s final year at Tottenham told its own story. Just 11 appearances. A player once tipped to dominate midfields in the Premier League instead found himself battling for trust, not just minutes.
Disciplinary issues stalked his spell in London, including a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide. The incident became a symbol of a career that had drifted off course, talent overshadowed by questions over reliability.
Ajax know all of this. They signed him anyway.
Not as a romantic rescue act, but as a calculated move to inject bite, experience and edge into a midfield that has looked too soft, too often, in recent seasons.
“I’m a winner” – Bissouma’s intent is clear
If Bissouma feels bruised by his Premier League exit, he isn’t showing it. His words in Amsterdam carried defiance and clarity.
“I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” he said, the relief at finally having a home again almost audible between the lines.
Asked whether the move surprised him, he dismissed the idea. This was not a last-minute scramble.
“Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here. They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”
That “project” will demand more than tidy passing and ball recoveries. Ajax need personality. Bissouma did not shy away from that responsibility.
“I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start.”
Leader in a dressing room of prospects
Ajax’s identity rests on youth, but youth needs a compass. Bissouma, with Premier League scars and European experience, walks into a dressing room stacked with potential and short on hardened guides.
He has already signalled that he wants more than a squad number.
“I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he said.
For a club that constantly sells and reloads, an experienced midfielder willing to mentor as well as compete is no small asset. Ajax are not only betting on his legs; they are betting on his voice.
Cruijff reveals long courtship
Behind the scenes, this was no opportunistic free transfer. Technical Director Jordi Cruijff revealed that Ajax had been tracking Bissouma’s situation for months and moved early to position themselves.
“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible,” Cruijff said.
No fee, multiple roles, high ceiling. On paper, it is the kind of deal Ajax built their modern era on.
The reality will be decided on grass. Can Bissouma turn a stop-start Premier League stint into fuel for a ferocious Eredivisie revival? Or will old doubts follow him to Amsterdam?
Ajax have placed their bet. Now it’s over to Bissouma.
