Roy Keane and Harry Kane: The Jolt Manchester United Needs
Roy Keane back at Manchester United. Harry Kane leading the line. For Quinton Fortune, that’s not fantasy football – it’s exactly the kind of jolt Old Trafford needs.
United are seven games without a win in all competitions, the latest blow a bruising 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como on Wednesday. The pressure on Michael Carrick is no longer a murmur; it’s a constant noise around the club. He is expected to remain in the dugout for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, but the sense is clear: this result will carry weight.
In the middle of that storm, Fortune has reached for the most uncompromising figure of United’s recent past.
“Roy did both at the highest level”
Fortune, who shared a dressing room with Keane under Sir Alex Ferguson, is convinced the former captain’s presence on the coaching staff would drag standards up immediately.
“Roy Keane coaching at Man Utd would be a lot of fun,” he told BOYLE Sports. Fun, in the Keane sense of the word, means hard truths and no hiding places.
“I was fortunate to play alongside Roy, and he was an unbelievable leader. He pushed every team to success and raised everyone's standards.
“I thoroughly enjoyed working with him in training and matches because he demanded excellence and made you a better player.”
Keane’s punditry has become appointment viewing, his criticism of United’s modern incarnations often cutting through the noise. For Fortune, that edge is backed by a career that earned the right to judge.
“I have the utmost respect for Roy. If he speaks out, it's because he wants excellence,” he said.
“People talk about walking the walk and talking the talk, Roy did both at the highest level on the pitch. Having him around at Man Utd would shake things up and be a lot of fun.”
Shake things up. In a club drifting through another bleak run, the phrase lands heavily.
“Go and get Harry Kane as soon as possible”
Fortune’s vision for a reset at Old Trafford does not stop at the touchline. It runs straight through the penalty area.
He believes United should do everything in their power to sign Harry Kane if even the slightest opening appears.
Kane, 33, is the bookmakers’ favourite to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with the ceremony scheduled for London on Monday. His status as one of the game’s elite finishers is not in doubt, and Fortune sees no reason for United to hesitate.
“He's not young but given what he's achieved, Man Utd should go and get Harry Kane as soon as possible, whatever it takes,” he said.
“If there's any chance of bringing Harry Kane in, do whatever it takes because the man is a natural-born goalscorer.
“Give him service and he will score goals. It's as simple as that. You give him service, he will put the ball in the back of the net.
“Just go and get him. Simple as that. If there's a possibility, there's a small chance of going to it. Don't wait any longer because what a player he is, my goodness.”
A club searching for direction. A former player calling for the fiercest of leaders on the training pitch and one of the deadliest finishers in world football on the grass.
Carrick’s United face Bournemouth next. The result may decide how quickly those kinds of ideas move from conversation to serious consideration.
