PSG Considering January Goalkeeper Signing Amid Safonov Doubts

Paris Saint-Germain’s search for certainty between the posts is not over. Not yet.

According to Le Parisien, the French champions are open to signing a goalkeeper in January, even with Matvey Safonov currently installed as No. 1. The message is clear: the position is his, but not untouchable.

Safonov took over midway through last season, inheriting the gloves from Lucas Chevalier, who himself had been brought in to succeed Gianluigi Donnarumma the previous summer. It was meant to be a clean succession plan. It has felt anything but.

Chevalier, highly rated after his emergence at Lille OSC, never truly settled at the Parc des Princes. His early months in Paris fell short of expectations, and the tension around the role never really eased. Safonov’s arrival steadied things on paper, yet the debate has simply changed shape rather than disappeared.

PSG’s behaviour on the market underlines that unease. Their summer push for Zion Suzuki was not a rumour on the fringes; it was a real pursuit. The Japan international chose Aston Villa instead, a reminder that even a club of PSG’s stature can miss out when the project does not fully convince.

That miss has not closed the file. Club officials remain on alert for any opening that might appear in January, ready to move if the right profile becomes available. The position is too critical, the margins in the Champions League too fine, to leave anything to chance.

Safonov has made visible progress with the ball at his feet, an essential trait in a side that builds from the back and dominates possession. His distribution has improved, his composure under pressure more in line with what a top European side demands.

Yet the flaws are stubborn. His difficulties defending his near post resurfaced in midweek against Barcelona, a recurring weakness that does not go unnoticed at this level. One lapse can tilt a tie; one pattern of lapses can reshape a transfer strategy.

So PSG move towards winter with a starter in place and a door deliberately left ajar. Safonov has the shirt. The question now is whether he can keep it once the market opens.
