Liverpool's Crucial Anfield Stretch: Barcola's Availability in Doubt
Liverpool head into a crucial Anfield stretch with a £123million question hanging over them.
Bradley Barcola, the French winger who has not missed a Premier League minute since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, was nowhere to be seen in the open training session watched by Sky Sports on Thursday. He was one of four senior players absent from the main group, with reports indicating he worked through an individual programme away from his team-mates.
For a side built on rhythm and relentless width, his status matters. A lot.
Barcola doubt clouds Brighton build-up
Anfield hosts Brighton on Sunday afternoon, the second of four consecutive home games across three competitions, and Barcola’s availability has suddenly become the main subplot. The knock that ruled him out of Tuesday night’s action has placed his involvement in serious doubt, and Liverpool will not know more until Andoni Iraola faces the media at his pre-Brighton press conference on Friday.
The stakes are obvious. Barcola has been ever-present in the league, a cornerstone of Iraola’s attacking blueprint since that headline-grabbing move from Paris. Take him out, and the entire shape of Liverpool’s forward line changes.
The twist? His potential absence comes at a time when his understudies are starting to make noise.
Wide-open flanks, clear call through the middle
Rio Ngumoha and Cody Gakpo both caught the eye in midweek, injecting pace and purpose out wide and forcing their way into the manager’s thoughts. They have turned what looked like a settled hierarchy on the flanks into a genuine scrap for minutes.
If Barcola fails to make it, Iraola suddenly has options rather than problems. Even if he does pull through, the performances of Ngumoha and Gakpo have given the coach a real decision to make on the wings.
Through the middle, the picture is far less complicated. Alexander Isak is expected to come in for Lewis Koumas up front, a switch that feels inevitable given the demands of this run and Isak’s pedigree at the sharp end of the pitch.
Wirtz pushing, Szoboszlai sidelined
The manager’s choices do not end there. Florian Wirtz, who came off the bench to score in midweek, is pushing hard for a recall to the starting XI. The most likely reshuffle would see Wirtz come in for Trey Nyoni, with Ryan Gravenberch dropping back into a more natural central midfield role alongside Alexis Mac Allister. That adjustment would give Liverpool extra craft between the lines without sacrificing balance in the middle.
Not all the news is positive.
Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to miss the Brighton clash with a hamstring injury, stripping Iraola of one of his primary midfield runners and long-range threats. On the right side, Jeremie Frimpong’s muscle issue is set to rule him out for around a month, another key outlet removed from the manager’s armoury.
They join Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley on an increasingly crowded injury list at a time when the fixtures are beginning to bite.
A defining home stand
Liverpool have already ticked off one assignment, beating Villarreal in the Champions League to open this four-game Anfield sequence. Chelsea arrive next Wednesday in the Carabao Cup last 16, before reigning Premier League champions Arsenal roll into town at the start of November.
Brighton, then Chelsea, then Arsenal. All at home. All demanding different answers.
Whether Barcola is fit to lead the charge from the flank, or Iraola is forced to lean on Ngumoha, Gakpo and Wirtz, will shape not just Sunday’s team sheet but the tone of a season-defining fortnight on Merseyside.
