Birmingham City Appoints John Murtough as Director of Football
Birmingham City have turned to a familiar Premier League operator to steer their ambitious project, appointing former Manchester United chief John Murtough as their new director of football.
The 55-year-old, who left Old Trafford in April after an 11-year stint that ended with him as football director, steps in as the permanent replacement for Craig Gardner, who exited St Andrew’s in June. It is a move that underlines the intent of the club’s US ownership: this is not a holding pattern, it is a build.
A heavyweight for the boardroom
Murtough arrives with a CV that carries real weight. Before his decade at Manchester United, he cut his teeth in senior roles at Everton, Fulham and Coventry City, and also worked with the Premier League itself. Most recently, he has been in Serie A as Atalanta’s director of global development, helping to shape one of Europe’s most admired modern football operations.
Now his focus shifts to Birmingham, a club trying to turn momentum into a long-term structure. Blues sit fourth in the Championship after three straight wins since the international break under head coach Chris Davies. The mood has changed quickly; the table already looks tempting.
This is where Murtough comes in.
Timing that matches momentum
He will officially begin work on Monday, immediately after this weekend’s Championship trip to Cardiff City. The timing is deliberate. Birmingham are in form, the season is still young, and the January window is creeping into view. The club want a clear football voice in place before the real decisions start to bite.
US ownership, a progressive young coach in Davies, a squad punching early, and now a seasoned operator from the top end of the game in the director’s chair. The pieces are starting to align.
What Birmingham do with this platform – and how quickly Murtough can turn Premier League and Serie A experience into Championship promotion muscle – will define where this revival leads.
