Leeds United Face Fitness Concerns Ahead of Sunderland Clash

Leeds United will travel to Wearside on Sunday with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over their forward line, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anton Stach and Noah Okafor all battle to prove their fitness in time for the clash with Sunderland.

All three picked up knocks in the bruising meeting with Manchester United and have spent the week in the treatment room rather than on the training pitch. Daniel Farke, speaking at Thorp Arch, made no attempt to hide the scale of the problem: every attacking starter from that game is a doubt.

Calvert-Lewin pain issue leaves Leeds sweating

Calvert-Lewin, such a central figure to Leeds’ attacking structure, took a heavy tackle late on against United and has been struggling with a bruised foot ever since. The injury is not muscular, which offers some relief, but the pain has kept him out of full training.

His situation is simple and brutal: if he can tolerate the pain, he plays. If he cannot, Farke loses his focal point up front.

There is a small sliver of encouragement. The bruise has eased over recent days and Leeds still have around 48 hours before kick-off. That extra time might prove decisive for a player Farke openly describes as “important”.

Stach and Okafor add to growing concern

Stach is in a similar position. He also left the United game with a foot problem and is dealing with significant discomfort. Like Calvert-Lewin, he has missed key sessions this week, leaving staff to guess how much he can realistically offer, if anything, at the Stadium of Light.

Okafor’s case is more delicate. He is nursing adductor issues picked up in the same match, and muscle injuries demand caution. Even if he makes the squad, Farke knows he cannot simply throw him in for 90 minutes and hope for the best. Any involvement is likely to be carefully managed, his minutes rationed to avoid a longer lay-off.

Right now, the picture is stark: if the game were being played today, Farke says all three would be unavailable.

Late calls and thin margins

The pressure now falls on Leeds’ medical and coaching staff to squeeze every possible hour out of the next two days. The trio have already missed a significant chunk of training, and the club will leave it as late as they dare before making final calls on selection and game time.

Complicating matters further, Joe Rodon is also a major doubt, adding a defensive concern to the attacking headache. It leaves Leeds juggling options at both ends of the pitch on the eve of a demanding away fixture.

There is at least one bright note. Daniel James has completed his first full week of training and is firmly in contention, a timely boost with so many question marks elsewhere in the squad.

Farke will walk into Sunderland knowing his game plan might hinge on a final fitness test or a player’s threshold for pain. For a Leeds side trying to build rhythm, it is a ruthless reminder: in a long season, even before a ball is kicked, the battles often start in the treatment room.
