Xavi Espart's Rise: From Under-19 Champion to Spain U21 Star

Xavi Espart’s surge at Barcelona has now broken through another ceiling. The 19-year-old has been called up to Spain’s Under-21 squad for the first time, the latest step in a rise that has gone from promising to irresistible in a matter of months.

He is the headline name in David Gordo’s list for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Finland, San Marino and Romania, a promotion that comes barely a year after he helped Spain lift the European Under-19 Championship.

From youth champion to U21 leader-in-waiting

Espart moves up from the Under-19s with a winner’s medal already in his pocket and a starting role at one of Europe’s biggest clubs on his CV. That combination is rare. At 19, many players are still trying to impose themselves in reserve teams; Espart is already part of Hansi Flick’s first-choice plans at Barcelona.

The timing of his call-up is no coincidence. His start to the 2026-27 campaign has been remarkable. He arrived as a highly rated La Masia product. He has turned himself into something else entirely: a dependable, multi-purpose piece in a new-look Barça.

Gordo has watched that transformation closely and made no attempt to hide his admiration. The Spain U21 coach began by pointing the spotlight back on Barcelona and Flick for daring to trust a teenager in senior football.

“I like to see teams putting their faith in him. Of course, I’m blown away when I see Under-21 players performing at that level,” Gordo said, via Mundo Deportivo, underlining how unusual it is to see someone that young already dictating games against grown professionals.

A brain that runs ahead of the game

What truly separates Espart, in Gordo’s eyes, is not just his technique or his running power. It is what happens before the ball arrives.

“Xavi has just come off the back of winning the Under-19 title,” the coach noted, before drilling down into the qualities that have fast-tracked the youngster through Spain’s age groups.

“His greatest strength is that he reads the game, space and timing very well. And he can do so from any position. He’s decisive as a central midfielder and as a full-back.

“He’s very intelligent. He’s always one step ahead in every situation. In some ways, he reminds me of Pedri because of the way he understands the game. It’s as if time moves differently for him.”

That comparison with Pedri is not made lightly. Within Spanish football, Pedri has become the reference point for football intelligence at a young age. To place Espart in that frame says everything about how quickly he has climbed in the national-team hierarchy.

Flick’s surprise solution on the left

Inside Barcelona, Espart was already viewed as a jewel. This season, he has become a solution.

Flick has turned to him primarily at left-back, trusting his positional sense and calm on the ball in a role that demands both courage and precision. Espart has responded by turning what was expected to be a learning experience into a genuine battle for a starting spot.

He has moved ahead of both Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde in the race for that left-back position, a sentence that would have sounded fanciful not long ago. His versatility only strengthens his case: he can step into midfield and look just as natural, just as composed, just as sharp in his decisions.

The trust is clear in Flick’s management. Espart was given a rest in the midweek win over Racing Santander, watching from the sidelines as Cancelo scored twice. On another day, that might have reopened the debate over who should start on the left.

Not this time. Despite Cancelo’s brace, the expectation around the club is that Espart will not be left out again when Sevilla arrive this weekend.

A teenager who began the summer as an Under-19 champion now stands as Barcelona’s preferred left-back and Spain’s newest Under-21 hope. The only real question left is how long he stays at this level before the senior national team comes calling.
