Union Berlin Embraces Ballon d'Or Banter After Kane and Olise Shine

Harry Kane and Michael Olise did the damage on the pitch. Union Berlin’s social media team took care of the rest.

Kane struck twice, Olise went one better with a hat-trick, and Bayern ran up a rout that left Union searching for a way to process the scoreline. They chose mischief.

As the goals flew in, Union’s X account pounced on a ready-made storyline: Lamine Yamal’s recent Ballon d’Or comments. The 19-year-old Barcelona prodigy had spoken confidently about his own chances and, pointedly, about what should matter in the race for the award. Union joined the debate with a wink.

"Couldn’t that 19-year-old rascal from Barcelona have just kept his mouth shut? Kane and Olise are really on fire today and proving that they are Ballon d’Or material," the club posted, tying the Bayern demolition directly to Yamal’s remarks.

The irony did not land with everyone. Some users took the barb literally, accusing Union of blaming Yamal’s words for the beating. The club didn’t retreat. It doubled down, replying drily: "Humour is not for everyone."

The tone was set. Union stayed with the bit, keeping the mood light despite the heavy defeat. In a follow-up post, the capital club tried to keep the joke safely away from any serious feud with Barcelona fans: "Please let this tweet steer well clear of Barcelona. I’m not ready for angry Catalans after this away trip."

Behind the online teasing sat a genuine flashpoint in the Ballon d’Or debate.

Speaking to former professional Jorge Valdano on Movistar Plus, Yamal had made it clear he views himself as one of the favourites for the award. He also slipped in a clear jab at Kane’s candidacy.

"I think the Ballon d’Or should go to the best player in the world, full stop," Yamal said, underlining that the prize should not be decided purely by the number of goals scored. The subtext was obvious. Kane’s numbers last season were monstrous: 73 competitive goals and the Golden Shoe to show for it.

Against Union, the England captain only strengthened his case. His brace took him to 100 and then 101 Bundesliga goals, a new record and another marker in a career built on relentless finishing.

Olise, with three of his own on the night, forced his way into the conversation too. His display, combined with Kane’s milestone and Yamal’s bold words, turned a one-sided match into a live chapter of the Ballon d’Or story.

Kane, Olise and Yamal now sit in the same sentence whenever the award is discussed. One lighting up Munich, one exploding alongside him, one talking up his claim from Barcelona. The goals, the comments and the banter are already on the record. The only thing left is the vote.
