Tyrell Malacia Joins FC Cincinnati from Manchester United
FC Cincinnati have landed one of the standout signings of the MLS season, prising Tyrell Malacia away from Europe and handing the former Manchester United defender a fresh start in the United States.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international joins on a free transfer and has signed a deal that runs through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 MLS campaign. For a franchise intent on staying near the top of the Eastern Conference, this is not a luxury move. It is a statement.
Cincinnati clear the runway
To get Malacia through the door, Cincinnati’s front office had to get creative.
The club acquired an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money the other way. That is a sizeable outlay for a roster spot two years down the line, underlining how heavily Cincinnati’s hierarchy rate the Dutch full-back.
General Manager Chris Albright made no attempt to hide his delight, describing the club as “excited to add a player of Tyrell's experience.” The message was clear: Malacia is not coming in as depth. He is being positioned as a cornerstone.
Leaving Old Trafford’s frustrations behind
For Malacia, the move draws a firm line under an uneven spell at Manchester United.
He arrived at Old Trafford from Feyenoord in 2022 and quickly impressed under Erik ten Hag with his aggression, energy, and front-foot defending. Then the injuries hit. Momentum stalled. Fitness issues repeatedly dragged him away from the starting XI just as he looked ready to cement a long-term role.
Even so, he still reached 50 appearances for United, featuring in both the Premier League and European competitions. Those minutes came against elite opposition, in high-pressure environments, and they now travel with him to TQL Stadium.
A locker room getting a proven campaigner
Cincinnati are not just signing a name. They are signing miles on the clock.
Malacia has already surpassed 250 professional appearances in Europe, a body of work built in the Eredivisie, the Premier League, and the Champions League. He has marked some of the game’s most dangerous wingers and survived some of its most intense atmospheres. That kind of experience is hard to buy, even harder to replace.
The “Orange and Blue” fanbase has already been teased with glimpses of their new full-back on social media, the club carefully building anticipation for his first appearance in MLS colors. When he walks into that locker room, he brings not just a résumé, but standards.
Silverware in his luggage
For all the frustration of his time in England, Malacia does not arrive in America empty-handed.
He was part of the Manchester United squad that lifted the 2022-23 EFL Cup, a trophy that ended a long wait for silverware at Old Trafford and reminded the club of its capacity to win on big occasions.
His recent loan spell back in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven added another major honor: the Eredivisie title in the 2024-25 season. Even as injuries and competition for places shaped his journey, he kept finding his way into successful dressing rooms.
A Dutch international in MLS
Malacia’s pedigree stretches beyond club football.
He has earned nine caps for the Netherlands and was included in the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the Dutch reached the quarter-finals before bowing out in dramatic fashion. That experience, of living inside a World Cup camp and dealing with the pressure of knockout football, adds another layer to his profile.
For Cincinnati, it all adds up to something simple: they have secured a European-tested, trophy-winning, World Cup-level defender in his prime, without paying a transfer fee.
Now the question becomes how quickly Malacia can turn that background into dominance on MLS pitches—and how far a reinforced Cincinnati back line can carry this ambitious club in the seasons ahead.
