Richarlison's Move to Vasco Falls Apart Amid Spurs Standoff

Richarlison’s route out of Tottenham has closed again. The proposed move to Vasco da Gama, which had gathered serious momentum, has fallen apart with the Brazil transfer window about to slam shut.

Tottenham were understood to have agreed a fee with Vasco for the 29-year-old, paving the way for an emotional return home. The structure was there, the clubs aligned, the timing tight but workable.

Then the deal hit the same wall that has stopped him once already: personal terms.

Negotiations over Richarlison’s contract with Vasco became a major stumbling block, and with Brazil’s window closing on Friday night, the chances of reviving the move have all but disappeared. Inside the club, there is a growing feeling that he will now remain a Spurs player, at least for the short term.

It leaves Richarlison in a strange limbo. He has already been left out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad after a £35m deadline-day move back to Everton collapsed, again over disagreements on personal terms. Two exits, two breakdowns at the final stage.

The contractual tension runs deeper than just transfer talks. On Thursday, it emerged that Richarlison and Spurs are in dispute over the remaining nine months of his current deal. The Brazilian is exploring his options and is understood to be keen on being released from the rest of his contract, which expires next summer. Tottenham, though, hold a crucial card: they can trigger a 12‑month extension.

So the club have control. The player wants freedom. And the clock keeps ticking.

Roberto de Zerbi, asked to cut through the uncertainty at his news conference on Friday, refused to be drawn into the saga.

“I don’t know,” he said. “It’s not my job.”

He kept his distance from the politics but made it clear there is no lack of awareness inside the building about what has unfolded between club and player in recent weeks.

“What I can say is I know very well what the club has done for Richarlison and I know very well what Richarlison has done for the club in the last month, two months,” De Zerbi said. “I know, the club knows, he knows, his agent knows. Everyone knows better than you [the media]. Much better.”

The message was pointed. The real conversations are happening behind closed doors, and they are not finished yet.

For now, Richarlison remains in north London, unattached to a squad, locked in a contract, and with two failed escape routes in the space of a fortnight. With Spurs holding an option to extend and the Brazilian pushing for a clean break, this stand-off is starting to feel like one that will define the rest of his Tottenham career — if there is one left to salvage.
