Raúl Asencio Returns to Real Madrid Squad Under Mourinho

José Mourinho has his squad. More importantly, he has Raúl Asencio back.

On the eve of Real Madrid’s league meeting with Rayo Vallecano, the Portuguese coach named a 23-man group that quietly carries a significant headline: Asencio, absent for more than a month, returns to the list at a moment when Madrid’s calendar is tightening and the margin for error in central defence is shrinking.

A defender back from the brink

Asencio’s comeback has been a long, awkward slog. First, a muscular problem in the rectus femoris. Then, just as he pushed towards recovery, a setback in the shin bone. Around six weeks gone in total, all of it spent watching, rehabbing, and waiting.

He has yet to play a single minute under Mourinho. Not one appearance. But over the last few days, the picture changed. The defender completed full sessions with the group, trained normally in the build-up to Rayo, and convinced the medical staff he was ready. Mourinho gave him the nod. He’s in.

The timing matters. Real Madrid are staring at a congested run of fixtures, with league games spilling into midweek and the physical toll beginning to show. In that context, one more central defender is not a luxury; it is a necessity.

A turbulent summer, on and off the pitch

Asencio’s name has not only lived in the medical reports. It has been on the market lists and in the court documents.

The young Spaniard came close to leaving Real Madrid in the summer, his future open to negotiation before injury abruptly froze any move. While his body healed, his off-field life played out in legal offices.

In recent days, he learned of his acquittal in the case linked to a video in which he was involved. That brought one kind of closure. Another case did not. A court convicted him of driving under the influence of alcohol on the island of Gran Canaria last August.

Mourinho did not hide his anger. The coach publicly reminded him, and the rest of the dressing room, what it means to wear the white shirt.

“A Real Madrid player remains a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. What you do outside the club can harm your reputation and the club's reputation, and I am not happy,” he said, drawing a hard line around behaviour and responsibility.

Now the noise quietens. Fit again, acquitted in one case and sanctioned in another, Asencio’s world narrows back to the pitch. His task is clear: prove he can be trusted, on the ball and off it, and force his way into a team he has only watched from the outside since Mourinho’s arrival.

Selection headaches and big absentees

While Asencio returns, others drop out. Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo all miss the squad for the Rayo clash, stripping Mourinho of experience and familiarity in key zones.

The rest of the list underlines the depth – and the pressure – at Real Madrid right now.

  • Goalkeepers: Courtois, Lunin, Sergio Mestre.
  • Defence: Asencio, Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Konaté, Cucurella, Carreras, Rüdiger, Dumfries.
  • Midfield: Bellingham, Camavinga, Valverde, Tchouaméni, Arda Güler, Bernardo Silva, Thiago Pitarch.
  • Attack: Vinícius, Endrick, Mbappé, Espí, Brahim Díaz, Diomandé.

It is a squad built to compete on multiple fronts, loaded with star names and rising talent. Somewhere in that hierarchy, Asencio must carve out a place.

His story now moves from courtrooms and treatment rooms to the grass. The question is no longer whether he will be available.

It is whether he can convince Mourinho he belongs in Real Madrid’s future, not just its squad list.
