Raphinha Commits to Barcelona: No Exit Talks
The rumours can stop now. Raphinha isn’t going anywhere.
After a summer spent with his name swirling around transfer columns, Barcelona’s captain has drawn a clear line under the speculation, declaring his intention to stay at the club long term and openly inviting the board to the table for a new contract.
“I renewed until 2028 with the idea that, by then, I would be 30 or 31 years old and I didn't know how I would manage,” he told RAC1. That was the cautious version of Raphinha. The one who wasn’t sure how his body and form would age at the very top.
This one looks very different.
Flick’s captain, Spain’s leading scorer
Hansi Flick handed Raphinha the armband this season, a bold call in a dressing room full of big personalities. The response has been emphatic.
The Brazilian has exploded out of the blocks, leading the scoring charts in Spain with nine goals and driving a Barcelona side that have started the domestic campaign in spectacular fashion. The captaincy hasn’t weighed him down; it has sharpened him. You can see it in the way he presses, the way he demands the ball, the way he finishes.
His current deal already runs until the summer of 2028, but sporting director Deco has made it clear the club want to lock him in for even longer. For a player once unsure how far his peak could stretch, the conversation has flipped.
Raphinha now feels his physical level and form have changed the equation entirely.
From uncertainty to a career-long commitment
“But given how I've started the season, I understand that I have enough to last a few more years,” he said. “So, yes, I would be happy to extend my contract a little and finish my career here without having to go anywhere else.”
That is not the language of a player keeping his options open. That is a statement of intent.
Under Flick, Raphinha looks settled and empowered. The system suits him, the responsibility fuels him, and the numbers back it up. His recent hat-trick against Racing Santander underlined why Barcelona are so keen to move quickly on a new deal. Every goal he scores strengthens his hand, but it also strengthens the club’s conviction that this is a player to build around, not cash in on.
For Raphinha, the idea is simple: repay the trust by dedicating the remainder of his career to the club that elevated him to captaincy and put the attack in his hands.
Sevilla next, Europe on the horizon
The immediate test comes on Saturday at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, where Barcelona face Sevilla and their in-form captain will look to add to his nine league goals and keep his momentum burning. He goes into that match not just as a scorer, but as the face of Flick’s early project.
Beyond that, the stakes rise again in the UEFA Champions League. Raphinha recently struck twice in a 5-1 demolition of Feyenoord, a performance that hinted at a player ready to dominate on the European stage as well as at home.
He has the armband, the goals, and now the clarity about where he wants his future to be. If this is only the beginning of his peak, how far can he drag Barcelona with him?
