Power Struggle in Austrian Football: Schöttel's Era Ends as Rangnick Prevails

The fault lines inside the Austrian Football Association have finally cracked open. On Friday, the supervisory board is expected to decide the fate of sporting director Peter Schöttel – and all signs point towards the end of his nine-year reign.

According to Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone, the relationship between Schöttel and head coach Ralf Rangnick is considered shattered beyond repair. The federation has already pushed Schöttel to the sidelines, a clear signal that the balance of power has shifted decisively towards the German coach.

This is no minor disagreement. It is a full-blown rupture at the top of the ÖFB.

A Partnership That Never Truly Worked

From the outside, Austria’s recent success suggested harmony. Inside, the opposite story was unfolding.

Former international striker and current Sky pundit Marc Janko lifted the lid on the mood in camp. “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising,” he said of the current developments.

Janko described a long-standing disconnect between the two key figures. With Schöttel and Rangnick, “it did not really work properly,” he explained. For some time now, Rangnick has been bypassing the sporting director on key issues, choosing to handle “all the matters that are important to him” through other people.

In other words, the sporting director in title had already lost much of his sporting influence.

End of a Golden Chapter

If Friday confirms his departure, it will close one of the most successful chapters in modern Austrian football.

Schöttel, now 59, joined the federation in 2017 as U19 coach. Within two months he was promoted to overall sporting director, and the national team’s trajectory changed.

Under his watch, Austria qualified for back-to-back European Championships. At both Euro 2021 and Euro 2024, the ÖFB side reached the last 16, establishing itself as a consistent tournament presence rather than a hopeful outsider.

The crowning moment came last summer. Austria reached a World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years – a landmark achievement for a country that had waited nearly three decades for that stage. The run ended in the round of 32 against eventual world champions Spain, but the symbolism was clear: Austria were back in the global conversation.

Now, the architect of that rise stands on the brink of the exit door.

Prödl Emerges as the Inside Favourite

Who comes next is not yet officially decided, but the succession race already has a clear frontrunner.

Krone reports that Sebastian Prödl, the former Bundesliga defender best known for his years at Werder Bremen, has emerged as the internal favourite to succeed Schöttel. Prödl has headed the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024, and his work there is said to be highly valued within the association.

One factor weighs heavily in his favour: his relationship with Ralf Rangnick. Unlike the fractured bond with Schöttel, Prödl is believed to enjoy an exceptionally strong rapport with the national team coach.

In a federation that has just watched a power struggle tear apart its sporting leadership, that single detail might prove decisive.
