Pato-backed consortium nears stake acquisition in Northampton Town

Northampton Town are on the brink of welcoming one of modern football’s most recognisable forwards into their boardroom, with a consortium involving former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil striker Alexandre Pato set to acquire a shareholding in the League Two club.

The Cobblers confirmed they have reached agreement with Sports Alpha Capital (SAC) over a proposed shareholding deal, a move that has already cleared the key regulatory hurdles. Both the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) and the English Football League (EFL) signed off the proposal earlier this month, removing the biggest obstacles in the process.

Now comes the final push.

In a statement, Northampton said they expect to be “in a position to confirm completion of the process” next week, signalling that only the last pieces of paperwork and formalities remain before the new investors step in.

Chairman Kelvin Thomas did not hide his relief at seeing the long-running talks edge towards the finish line, acknowledging the often messy reality of football takeovers.

“Football club transactions always have many moving parts and often take a little longer than you would hope, but we are thrilled to be moving forward,” he said, capturing both the frustration of the wait and the optimism around the club’s next chapter.

On the investors’ side, Joao Xavier, founding partner at Sports Alpha Capital, underlined the significance of the agreement after months of work behind the scenes.

“We are very happy to have reached formal agreements,” he said. “Obviously obtaining IFR and EFL approvals was a big step, but this is also a very important milestone, and we look forward to closing next week.”

SAC are not newcomers to the lower-league investment landscape. Earlier this year, they held discussions over a potential takeover of Colchester United, only to walk away after initial talks. This time, the process has gone the distance, with Northampton set to become their entry point into the English professional game.

Pato is named by SAC as one of its investors, alongside Gemcorp Capital, a London-based independent investment management firm. The exact size of SAC’s proposed shareholding in Northampton Town has not been disclosed, leaving unanswered questions about the scale of their influence and the balance of power in the boardroom.

What is clear is the profile of the most eye-catching backer.

Pato, 37, retired from playing last year after a career that took him from Brazil to Europe and back again. He remains best known for his electric five-and-a-half-year spell at AC Milan, where he scored 63 goals in 150 appearances and helped the club to the Serie A title in the 2010-11 season. His brief stint at Chelsea added Premier League experience to a CV already rich with Champions League nights and international caps for Brazil.

Now his name is set to be attached not to a dressing room, but to a share register in League Two.

For Northampton, a club rooted in the realities of the EFL grind, the arrival of a consortium with global connections and a former Brazil forward among its investors hints at a different kind of ambition. The numbers, the precise ownership breakdown, and the strategic plan will all come into sharper focus once completion is confirmed.

For now, the message from both sides is simple: the deal is almost done. The real intrigue lies in what Pato and SAC plan to build once they are through the door.
